Sunrise Residential Treatment Center

About

Residential Treatment Center and Therapeutic Boarding School for Teen Girls.

Description

We founded Sunrise Residential Treatment Center on the belief that each girl we meet is unique. Your daughter has her own experiences and talents, her own relationships, and her own struggles. To best meet her needs, our residential treatment program focuses on a customized approach to healing.

By combining the best features of a boarding school, treatment facility and transition program, we give our students the support they need to overcome emotional or behavioral struggles that can keep them from living fulfilling lives and having healthy family relationships.

Sunrise’s unique, all-in-one treatment allows many girls to complete all phases of their healing process in a single program. Our length of stay tends to be shorter than many other residential treatment centers because we individualize each girl’s treatment plan and maintain a small community for our girls.

Mission

Our mission is to help every teen girl who comes to Sunrise become a confident, healthy, and independent young woman.

"Sunrise is a residential treatment center for adolescent girls ages 13-17 aimed at uncovering the academic, social, and emotional potential of girls who have been held back by emotional or behavioral struggles. Sunrise combines the warmth of a home, the safety and clinical expertise of a residential treatment program, and the community access of a transition program."

Don’t believe the negative reviews. Sunrise saved our daughters life, full stop. It requires real commitment from the student the family etc… and the result in our case was life changing for the good. This place is appropriately strict and holds students accountable while literally customizing each day/ each hour to the student’ s needs. Clinical, experiential, groups, living conditions, educational… all lined up … for us, despite initial fears , was the best possible under the circumstances. If you have a daughter with needs please—- Take the time to know this place and talk to those of us have experienced it. Truly a lifesaver in every way.
I worked for sunrise several years ago and I still think highly of this place. So much so I really wanted to say this. First, I wanted to say that I feel like I can say that I have been able to see this place from a unique perspective. I was a teenage in the same place as many of those who attend this program. And although I did not attend sunrise as a teen, I am very familiar with how therapy is observed from the mind of someone really struggling. Fast forward 15 years. When I began working for Sunrise I was in my early 30s and had several years experience of working in the social services field- so with all of that being said here is my honest opinion. Sunrise is one of the best programs you will find. The staff and medical team want to see not just those attending, but families as well as staff member's of sunrise succeed in any capacity. What I mean by that is as a staff member, we too are also trained to experience what the same therapies, and experiences that the students and families go through so we can better support them. Sunrise wants nothing more than to help families grow closer. On a personal note, I will say that Treatment is not a place for parents to leave their children when it gets to hard. Rather its a place to guide each member of the family through a difficult time that we all struggle to navigate, knowing that there is no shame in admitting help is needed. And I have seen sunrise do this incredibly well. Sunrise is not perfect. And that’s my favorite part. As staff I have seen leaders admit when we are the ones making mistakes, or when we don’t know something and then I have seen those people turn around to find the answers and to set the example that is being asked of. This place is truly about growth and compassion and although it is full of flawed humans as we all are one thing I loved personally about working here is that everyone I worked with had a desire to be a better human. That in turn made me want to be better. That being said, it is also up to you how much you get out of it. The staff won’t do the work for the teens or family, But I know for sure that whatever you are hoping to get out of sunrise in way of healing and support- there is always someone there willing to help you through.
This place sucks but it's not abusive. The reason it sucks is because RTCs aren't effective in general- whoever thought putting a bunch of mentally ill teenagers, all from different backgrounds, into a confined living situation would be a good idea has something wrong with them. Sunrise itself is one of the less bad treatment centers, not to say it wasn't hell. If you're gonna send your kid somewhere, find a smaller treatment center with less clients. SUNRISE IS NOT ABUSIVE I was there from March 2020 till September 2021. Limiting phone calls and having a level system isn't abuse. Staff never hurt us physically and if a staff was hurting someone emotionally saying "that's against dress code" was considered verbal abuse to some of the students, they usually got fired pretty quick. This place is good compared to Diamond Ranch or Cinnamon Hills but I wouldn't recommend. *EDIT* Tell Andrew and Jaci I say hi :
Our daughter recently graduated from Sunrise after a 15 month stay, and we couldn't speak more highly of the program, staff, mentors, teachers, and therapists. Sunrise uses a whole-family approach to holistically address the students' needs, and the transformation has been nothing short of miraculous. Yes, our daughter still struggles, but now she has the tools to manage those struggles if she so chooses. And much of the time, blessedly, she does.
THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. I went here in 2007 when I was 17. Sunrise destroyed me. It broke my spirit and my confidence and I’ve never recovered. I’m 32 now and I still struggle to trust anyone. I’ll never trust my parents, even though they have apologized. I still have nightmares about Sunrise. Sometimes I’ll have a random memory from Sunrise and just have a panic attack. Maybe I need therapy but I’ll never trust a therapist now. Also for any parents considering sending your daughter here, please be aware that two girls died in their care in 2010. This place isn’t safe by any stretch of the imagination.
I was at Sunrise from May 2018- May 2019. Almost 3 years, after graduation, I can confidently say that this place is the reason I am still here, today. The journey is not always easy and smooth sailing, but I am a personal believer that the journeys that take the most work eventually come with the most rewarding outcomes. Sunrise has taught me more than I can put into words and has helped me mold a rewarding life for myself where I am able to be present and experience all my emotions. When sunrise talks about "uncovering the academic, social, and emotional potential of girls" I can strongly affirm that this is what they have accomplished, with me. Sunrise made me uncover my potential in various realms, including leadership, service, academics, relationships and more. The relationships I formed here, with the girls and staff, are still some I have continued to nourish and maintain , 3 years later. Now, not every place is perfect and I do think that there are some aspects of the program that gave a bit of too much power to the youth mentors. Nevertheless, the clinical team is top notch and I do not think you can find therapists better than these. My therapists, Kayla now the Hurricane clinical director and Megan, were able to help me find myself again and I am forever grateful for the faith and work they invested in me. Additionally, the senior clinical director, Craig, worked with me post-graduation to help me get back to the individual I worked so hard to uncover, at Sunrise. The support of Sunrise doesn't stop with your time, there. The staff and therapists are people who are truly invested and care about every girl and want to see them thrive. To this day, I can reach out for support when I hit bumps in the road. I could honestly talk about how much this place has impacted me, forever. In essence, Sunrise holds a very special place in my heart. During my time at Sunrise, I remember hearing an alum say this phrase and I don't think it can be more applicable.....Sunrise works if you work it.
Although each person is different, Sunrise helped us and our daughter communicate with each other and build a trust. The DBT program is a journey to go through together. It isn't always easy or perfect. Please don't be discouraged by the bad reviews, as we also read them, but realized they are usually from girls and/or families that didn't finish the program. You have to be committed to graduating and doing the hard work needed to find a life worth living. Our therapist, Mary, was outstanding. The mentors are young and connect with the girls. Sunrise is not a fun place to live, it is not intended to be easy, but rather a safe place to have therapy, work through trauma, and rediscover yourself. Not everything is perfect, but our daughter is now 8 months past graduation and thriving. Thank you Sunrise for helping us get our daughter back!
UPDATE: I graduated from here in 2019, so 5 years ago, and I still have flashbacks and nightmares about this place. I did have trauma heading in, but instead of helping me, they just gave me more. if you are thinking about sending your daughter here, please rethink and try and come up with an alternative idea!! please DO NOT send your child here!! when I first got out, and for quite a long time after, I suppressed all that I saw and went though there, but with the help of my current therapist I have realized how traumatic sunrise really is. I mean, is dragging a kid up the stairs by their arms if they don't want to watch a movie really called for?? is keeping a kid in a room almost 24/7 for a month called for?? and these are just some of my personal experiences there.
Stellar care. Saved my girl’s life after trauma derailed her. Every day I’m grateful for the skills she learned and uses daily. She is thriving now. She is an amazing human and so are the staff at Sunrise that we knew in the 10 months she was there from 2019-2020. I’m sure some of the reviews are skewed by the very ill clients they serve at Sunrise. But as far as RTCs go, I’d recommend Sunrise 100% as of my experience until 2020. I don’t know what may have changed in the last two years.
My daughter spent just over 10 months at Sunrise and it was life changing for our entire family. It was truly the most difficult decision I ever had to make to put her in treatment but we are thankful every single day. She was struggling in many areas of her life and we could not seem to find a solution until Sunrise. Her time at Sunrise was not easy but we as a family are better for it and she has found a sense of calm and self-identity that will serve her well throughout her life. The skills she learned are present in her daily life. I am eternally grateful for the team at Sunrise for helping our family.
