Sunset Elementary School, in the Washington Elementary School District, serves more than 600 prekindergarten through sixth grade children in the neighborhood bordered by Olive Avenue on the south and Peoria Avenue on the north, from 43rd Avenue to 51st Avenue.
Sunset affords students a rich curriculum aligned to Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. The school received a “B” rating by the Arizona Department of Education for 2013-2014. Sunset has the distinction of showing academic growth for the past four years.
During the 2015-2016 school year, Sunset will continue to embrace Character Counts, with a focus on the six pillars of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship and caring. Teachers will continue to work with Whole Brain Teaching as a way to actively engage students in their lessons and build student engagement in the learning process.
We are also committed to our Continuous Improvement Plan, which focuses on instructional practices. Staff will be building our reading intervention plan and data discussions to make decisions to best meet the needs of all students every day. Staff will also work together to implement the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. The structure of RTI will provide Sunset students with added academic support. Teacher instructional strategies will continue to improve with a focus on increased student engagement and academic growth for all. Teachers will also continue working on math instructional strategies to build a strong understanding of math skills and understanding for all students.
