The lead counselor and founder, Ashley Jacobus, has a passion for helping others live their best life. She feels particularly drawn to working with children, individuals diagnosed with developmental delays, trauma, veterans, postpartum depression, LGBT+ persons, and human trafficking survivors. Ashley has advanced training and certifications in treating trauma in children, teens, and adults, some of which are movement based in the form of yoga and dancing. She is trained in EMDR. She is also pursuing certification in Autism Spectrum Disorder at BGSU and Animal Assisted Therapy.
Taylor, Case Manager, provides a variety of services to assist clients with applying skills learned in counseling to real-life situations. She works in schools, visits clients' homes, performs job coaching, and is a strong advocate for every member of the Institute. She loves being assisted by our therapy pups-in-training, Sunny and Daisy! Taylor will also become certified in Animal Assisted Therapy soon!
Sunny and Daisy are our f1b labradoodles. This designation means they are first generation and hypoallergenic. This is important in regards to temperament and shedding. Labradoodles are notoriously intelligent, friendly, service-oriented, and light shedders. They will be present for some group and individual counseling sessions when appropriate and welcomed by all. Sunny and Daisy are working toward becoming Certified Therapy Dogs.
Various settings and services are available at Sunshine Institute to meet the unique needs of each person who walks through the door. Sunshine Institute has three treatment rooms available to enhance the therapeutic process: a living room environment, an open group room, and a sort of sensory playground room. Please check out the photos portion of this page to see pictures of the office! Even the waiting area is a fun, sensory-stimulating environment to make time spent engaging and relaxing.
Stay tuned for more information on other staff members and services at Sunshine Institute. We have plans to add several more amazing professionals in 2018! Beginning with counseling and case management, Sunshine Institute plans to offer psychological assessment, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and many other services in the near future to create a total wellness center in the middle of our community.
