Let SI Help! Need to find the time and place of your SI Session? Go to https://umdearborn.edu/casl/undergraduate-programs/academic-support/supplemental-instruction-si/si-schedule to find your class' scheduled sessions.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized academic support program offering free, regularly scheduled study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. For supported courses, each week there are generally two to three 60-minute sessions where collaborative learning techniques are used to study. Research has suggested that students studying in focused, collaborative groups retain approximately 2.5 times more than students who study alone!
Since SI sessions are facilitated by SI leaders (SILs) who have demonstrated competence in the course subject matter, we know we can help! For the past 6.5 years of SI in the Behavioral Science department -- for all supported sections -- the final grade for students who attended SI averaged ½ to one full grade higher than for non-attendees. Even more impressive is that for those students who attended SI, the number who did poorly in the class (i.e. got grades of D or F, or who withdrew from class altogether) -- what we call the 'DFW rate' -- was almost non-existent and significantly lower than the DFW rate for students who did not attend SI!
Supervised by Deborah Roundtree, a UMD Lecturer II for the last 14 years, the staff of student leaders has expanded from 11 in the fall of 2010 to a staff of 40 for the 2016-2017 school year and we now offer support to a limited number of summer courses as well! When courses are offered, SI provides free study group support for:
* Psych 101
* Psych 320 (cross-listed as Soc & CRJ 382)
* Psych 363
* Psych 370
* Psych 381
* Psych/CRJ 440
* Psych 461
* Soc 200
* Soc 410 (cross-listed as CRJ & HPS)
* Soc 450
* CRJ 200
* CRJ 468
* CRJ 473
Also we support some sections of:
* Econ 201
* Econ 202
* Phil 233
We encourage you to ask for SI supported sections when you register for your classes so that you can participate in a program that will provide the best possible foundation in effective studying and applying concepts and principles in all Behavioral Science courses and beyond! SI is also available for Natural Sciences, COB and CECS classes -- just ask which courses when registering!
