Super sad the Brentwood location is closing! I went on a Sunday for the "Pasta at Home" class! I learned to make fresh spinach spaghetti noodles and carbonara sauce, as well as tagliatelle noodles with a red sauce, and Caesar salad and homemade Caesar dressing. Kyia was such a fun instructor!
BUYER BEWARE!!! My husband and I were excited about the Date Nite class. We went with friends and when we walked in, there were two other couples expected in the class. Each one of the two other couples were set to prepare their meal as a couple and ours was as a group of four. When I realized it was going to be three of us watching one person at a time perform a small task, I asked the chef if we could prepare our own as a couple so we would get to learn the skills and the experience. She informed me “this is the way they do it.” Hmm two couples don’t share??? Well one couple couldn’t make it so she said we could cook their food. The assistant for the class did not show so the chef was trying to manage all the dishes on her own. When done, we had to stand to eat since there are no tables and are not allowed to take home leftovers. $178 is what we paid for $20 of food that we stood and ate quickly. When I went to check out with some items I purchased, Peggy may be manager told me in a very rude manner “if you come back to our class, you need to be nicer to the chef”. My husband and I were confused since the only thing I said to the chef was asking if we could cook as a couple. Peggy proceeded to tell me that I asked for something from the chef she couldn’t do and it upset her. She said the site says we could work in groups of 4 and I should not have asked for anything different. How rude. Needless to say, it will be the last time I step foot in the store. Just be aware of how it was done.
Went to a cooking class with my sister and we loved it! Chef Joe did an amazing job and was so fun. We met some nice people and made a tasty and beautiful meal. We wouldn’t have changed anything about it. We loved the delicious steak, gnocchi, and fabulous dessert. We are both looking at other classes to book.
Don’t bother with the cooking class. It is way overpriced for the food, you can’t byob despite the website saying you can and they aren’t very kind to their patrons. This could be so much better with a little effort, like leaving being able to sit at a real table to eat perhaps? I think we were expecting something far more romantic and fun but it was more like punching the clock, having a date standing up for two hours in a bright cafeteria and being so starving by 9:15 pm that you tolerate eating your $100 dish standing at the place you prepared it. Super odd. Albeit memorable.
My adult daughter and I did the "Date Night" cooking class which consisted of making Panna Cotta, Steak with Marsala sauce and Gnocchi/Squash with browned butter sauce. We had such a good time. I'm certain it was because the chef leading the class who was able to simultaneously keep the class moving with clear instruction which sometimes she had to repeat because I wasn't listening while focusing on all of the details as well as focusing on helping those who were getting behind with their tasks. I appreciated her ability. She had such a calm demeanor which made it all enjoyable. As other reviews mention, if you sign up as a couple, you will, or may, be with another couple as there are 4 people to one cooking station with one set of ingredients. We lucked out in that the other couple who was to show at our station did not show. That may have added to our enjoyment of the class. All the other attendees in the class were families who seemed to know the drill as each of them had 4 in their group.
Took a cooking class and enjoyed it. The menu was good and the staff was helpful. I didn’t enjoy it as much as classes at Whole Foods as the kitchen was smaller and there wasn’t as much hands on cooking. As part of the class you received a discount on merchandise and they did have some good items.
My boyfriend and I attended a cooking class recently and I just wanted to share my thoughts about it because I think people need to know exactly what they are signing up for for. The idea of taking a cooking class sounded amazing but when we arrived we knew we would have to share the activity with 2 other people but the amount of actual cooking and the tasks given were too minimal. It was a one task at a time kind of class so while one of the four do a task the other three people just stand there and wait. We were not expecting that, we were expecting more of a kitchen aspect with multiple tasks at a time to create a beautiful meal. That did not happen. As far as the actual quality of food, the appetizer was fine but nothing morechicken coconut soup, the dessert was fabulous and the best part of the entire experiencemango sticky rice, and the entree was terrible. The chef made the sauce in a big batch for all groups and he was supposed to soak the noodles before hand so they would be edible when cookedPad Thai. The sauce he made was pretty terrible, way too sweet, and the noodles were basically raw and couldn’t even chew through the hardness of them. The chef was a nice guy and apologized about messing up the noodles but the entire experience was no where near worth $160 for 2 people. I think people should know exactly what they are getting into and what exactly they are paying for going into this activity. We often shop at Sur la Table for kitchen gadgets and will continue but really just trying to give honest feedback to help improve the overall experience for future customers.
The customer service I experienced was incredibly disappointing for a high end store. After explaining my situation, they did nothing to accommodate my exchange that was slightly outside their policy. I will never go back.
The cooking class was fantastic!!!! The chef was upbeat and informative and full of life. That is until her manager came back and publicly reprimanded her to the point of tears. I felt so sorry for her having to deal with a manager that has non-existent management skills and doesn’t begin to understand the most basic concepts of management. I can’t in good conscience ever consider shopping there knowing that they treat their employees like dirt.
I read the reviews and almost canceled. This was such a fun, totally hands on experience! We will definitely go again!
