The Residency in General Surgery at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center is
a standard five-year program. NHRMC is a county-owned, 628-bed facility that
serves a seven-county area in southeastern North Carolina. It serves both as a
community hospital for the Wilmington, N.C. metropolitan area and as a tertiary
referral center for its surrounding seven counties. The Wilmington metropolitan
area has a population of 230,000 and a catchment area population of 600,000.
The population base assures the subspecialty clinical volumes to support active
programs in all surgical areas.
NHRMC has characteristics that traditionally have been associated with both public
and private hospitals. Its charter commits the hospital to the care of the indigent.
As the most advanced specialty hospital in the region, it supports many private
group practices in all fields of surgery and medicine. Community faculty maintains
busy general, endovascular, and advanced laparoscopic practices in which
surgical residents play an active role. There are more than 100,000 emergency
department visits each year and an additional 40 000 ED visits at its two affiliated
hospitals in which general surgical services are either not provided at all or are
available on a part time basis. General surgical volume from these facilities is
transferred to NHRMC.
As a North Carolina-designated Level II Trauma Center, the hospital maintains
a busy Trauma Service with 1,500 annual admissions. Teaching faculty serve as
the Trauma Service. The Zimmer Cancer Center of the NHRMC provides the only
fully integrated multidisciplinary oncologic service in southeastern North Carolina.
It is accredited as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program by the American College
of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
Our aim is to maintain the collegial atmosphere expected in a small community
residency while functioning within the confines of a large, busy medical center.
Resident learning, operative and clinical experience, and personal well-being are
of the highest priority. The patient volume and educational curriculum at NHRMC
assures that residents receive a rich educational and training experience.
NHRMC combines the best educational aspects of a university program with the
best clinical elements of a community teaching hospital. Each member of the
full-time faculty of the Residency Program holds a full-time tenure track academic
appointment in the Department of Surgery of UNC-Chapel Hill. Community faculty
is all board certified in their specialties and hold clinical appointments at UNC-Chapel
Hill. The most relevant characteristic of the faculty is its commitment to the mission
of NHRMC.
