Swedish Center for Perinatal Bonding & Support

About

The Center for Perinatal Bonding & Support is a supportive, comprehensive program serving pregnant & postpartum women with mood & anxiety disorders.

Description

The Center for Perinatal Bonding & Support at Swedish is a supportive, comprehensive program serving pregnant women and mothers of young children. We specialize in treating women experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mood disorders that make it difficult to function at home or at work; care for themselves or their baby; or bond and connect with their baby. We offer outpatient therapy, reproductive psychiatry, and a day program.

Outpatient Perinatal Therapy
Our therapists are specially trained to care for mothers who are struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, attachment, sleep, grief and loss. We use a variety of therapeutic techniques, informed by cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and attachment theory. Our therapeutic approach is collaborative, patient centered and solution oriented.

Reproductive Psychiatry
Our psychiatrists specialize in pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding medication management. Many people worry about the effects of medications on their baby during pregnancy. Not all patients need medications, but sometimes they are recommended. Our providers have a particular interest in this area and can discuss with you the latest information about risks and benefits of medications in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The choice to take medications is yours.

The Day Program
The Day Program is an outpatient partial hospitalization program for new and expecting moms. We welcome women to our supportive community where you can speak openly and get help for symptoms including sleeplessness, uncontrollable worrying, emptiness, guilt, not feeling like yourself, intrusive thoughts, anxiety and more.

At the Day Program you can expect:
• A combination of individual, group, and family therapy
• Various treatments ranging from interpersonal to art to cognitive behavioral therapy
• Discussions of coping skills, communication, relationships, relaxation and mindfulness
• Support with mother-baby bonding
• The opportunity to connect with other moms experiencing similar symptoms
• Medication evaluation and management if needed

Women are encouraged to bring their babies. The program is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Thursday; women attend for one to three weeks, as recommended by the care team.
