Sweet Potato’'s Grill & Soul Food Take-out Restaurant’'s menu combines the best of creative and timeless grilling techniques that utilize wet and dry rubs, spices and homemade sauces with “"down home”" southern cooked cuisine. The restaurant has a state of the art grill and meat smoker where ribs are marinated for 24 hours and smoked 3 hours before making it on to the grill. All meals are freshly prepared!
Sticking to the namesake customers will find the most amazing, fluffy and light sweet potato cornbread and muffins and sweet potato pancakes, freshly baked sweet potato pies and other southern desserts to be devoured. Customers can also find healthy choices on the menu such as fresh grilled fish and chicken, sautéed broccoli and spinach, brown rice with peppers and onions and Power Pasta which consist of grilled chicken, brown pasta, garlic, olive oil and tons of seasoning.
Newark born, Dorian Herrill is the owner of Sweet Potato’'s Grill & Soul Food Take-out Restaurant. He learned how to be an entrepreneur and chef from his maternal grandfather who owned several businesses in Newark while Dorian was growing up including a barbeque catering business. He spent countless summers working the pit grill for his grandfather, learning early about the ends and outs of grills and homemade barbeque sauces. Captain Herrill as his colleagues refer to him, went on to perfect his culinary skills by cooking for his fellow Newark fire fighters for the past 17 years. They especially like his homemade sweet potato pies….... hence the name of the restaurant. It was just a matter of time before Dorian a serial entrepreneur opened his own restaurant in his beloved city of Newark.
Dorian is very active in the Newark community. He is the first-vice president of the Vulcan Pioneers of New Jersey, an association that advocates for the rights of black firefighters. He is also a deacon at the New Psalmist Worship Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The restaurant is open 7 days a week, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers catering services for all of your needs.
