Food & Beverage Service & Distribution
Sysco Albany was formed in 1933 as The Albany Frosted Foods when Herbert K. Liebich began selling frozen vegetables to restaurants in the area. The vegetables were packed by the original developer of frozen foods, the Bird’s Eye Company. Business was conducted by taking an order one week and delivering it on a “Peddler” truck the following week. Incorporated in June of 1936, Albany Frosted Foods is the oldest, continuously operating frozen food distribution company in the United States.
By 1947, Territory Salesmen were making customer calls with product delivered on refrigerated trucks. In 1949, The River Valley “Private Label” was designed and the River Valley Company was formed. Tabulating Equipment was installed in 1953. Data Processing had never been used for food distribution, so Albany Frosted Foods was a pioneer in the Data Processing field. Our first programmer originated many programs that were shared with other distributors through computer manufacturers.
In 1965 the Albany Frosted Foods, Inc. purchased Empire State Frozen Foods of Troy, NY, a company devoted to leasing and servicing juice equipment. With this acquisition, our Dispenser Department was created as a specialty segment of our overall business. In 1973, Albany Frosted Foods entered the Supplies and Equipment segment of our business and in September 1989, The Fulton Fish Company was purchased which allowed us to add fresh seafood to our product line.
Albany Frosted Foods, Inc. joined Sysco Corporation of Houston, Texas, in September 1970.
Sysco Albany, began as a retail store located in Elsmere, New York. In 1961, the company moved from their location in downtown Albany to Warehouse Row in Colonie, New York and in May, 2001 move to new 290,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility located in Halfmoon, New York.
