TCBA is a voluntary, local bar association located in Tarrant County, Texas, with 15 sections, and 24 committees, plus 11 community-service based events co-sponsored with Tarrant County Bar Foundation. Through various sponsored venues, TCBA offers over 200 hours of CLE credit per year.
To advance the science of jurisprudence; to facilitate and improve the administration of justice; to maintain and to elevate standards of professional conduct; to increase professional skills through regular continuing legal education; and to encourage and promote a better understanding of the legal profession by the public.
Lawyer Referral & Information Service – This service was established in the 1970s and it provides the public with general information and referrals to attorneys in specific areas of law. LRIS panel members provide a half-hour of legal consultation to clients for $20. If further legal services are needed, the client and attorney agree on a fee arrangement. The LRIS refers over 20,000 calls per year.
LegalLine – This free call in service was established in 1994 and is held the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 6 – 8 pm. This service offers an opportunity for free legal advice by volunteer attorneys to the public.
Elder Law Handbook – The 4th Edition, with supplement, of this award winning handbook has been published. The Bar Association has distributed over 30,000 copies to citizens in Tarrant County and surrounding counties in both English and Spanish. The handbook is based on Texas law and is a general summary of the laws as they existed at the printing of the edition. It provides resources for services and support organizations in the community and state that pertain to senior citizens.
People’s Law School – This free community service program is organized and produced by the Tarrant County Bar Association in conjunction with several partners and sponsors, Tarrant County Bar Foundation, Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, and NBC 5. This program was created to bring basic legal information to the community, demystify the law, and educate people about their legal rights. The program is usually scheduled in the Spring of each year.
Community Outreach – The Bar Association keeps a list of local attorneys and judges who are available to speak to community and school organizations and groups in various areas of the law. A handbook entitled “Now You Are 18” is available for distribution to high school seniors at Career Day.
Fee Arbitration Committee – The Fee Dispute Committee, which includes public members, serves the important function of settling fee disputes that might otherwise escalate into grievances or lawsuits between clients and attorneys.
Blood Drive – Each Spring a Blood Drive is held for the Carter BloodCare Center.
Canned Food Drive – Each November local law firms and legal offices assist in the collection of food items and monies for the Tarrant County Area Food Bank.
National Adoption Day – This national event is held every November. Local attorneys, judges, law students, and agencies donate their time and services to assist in the adoptions of children. In 2007, 75 children were adopted. Teddy Bears & Books are collected and given to the children and their new siblings during the National Adoption Day event and at monthly adoptions held in the Tarrant County Family Courts.
Trinity Habitat for Humanity – Members donate their time and money to build homes through the habitat project. The seventh home was built in the Fall of 2008.
Access to Justice Campaign – The Bar Association has collected thousands of dollars to benefit Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas which provides high quality, cost efficient legal services to low income people. Through the Access to Justice, attorneys can donate their time and services in taking cases through Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas.
