Temescal Regional Recreational Area

Description

Temescal Regional Recreation Area, formerly Lake Temescal Regional Park, is a regional park in the Berkeley Hills, in northeastern Oakland, California. The TRRA encompasses 48acres, abutting SR 24, SR13, and the interchange connecting the two highways, southwest of the Caldecott Tunnel. The park is part of the East Bay Regional Park District .History of the lakeLake Temescal was created in 1869, after Anthony Chabot won a contract to supply the town of Oakland, California with drinking water. Chabot had already become notable by developing a method of extracting gold from the Sierra Nevada mountains with high-pressure water cannons. He decided to use the same technique to construct a reservoir by blasting the walls above Temescal Creek, and recovering the dirt and rocks to build an earthen dam across the creek. Chabot had already formed the Contra Costa Water Company to pump water from the proposed reservoir to the Oakland water system.By 1875, Oakland's population had grown to about 25,000 from about 10,000 when the dam was first completed. It was obvious that Lake Temescal was too small to remain the primary source of the city's water, so Chabot's company moved farther south to construct a much larger reservoir, later named Lake Chabot. Temescal became only a secondary source.Lake Temescal is the main attraction in the park, which also offers trails, picnic areas, forest habitats, and bird watching. The lake was originally constructed as a drinking water reservoir for the city of Oakland. It was one of the first three parks opened to the public in 1936 by the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD).

Pretty unknown even for locals. Hidden gem. Lots of grassy areas, trail around the lake. Bike trail. Bathrooms with toilet paper. Unfortunately dogs are only allowed leash. There are some children playgrounds and a beach that is usually closed with algae. People like to fish here. We were offered fish from a fisherman while we walked by once. Two parking lots. Usually were never staffed but there’s a sign saying there will be paid parking from July 2023 onward. We paid $5. Another friend couldn’t get change for her $50 so came to borrow and then rain back to the kiosk to get her parking ticket for her dashboard. There is free parking on Broadway street if you wanted to walk in. Makes the parking lot much emptier. Supposedly there is a charge for dogs but we hang been charged this ever yet. There is a paved road on one side of the lake and a rocky one on the other. There’s also a steeper trail on the hilly side. Dog-friendliness: Only leashes but you will see some people let theirs offleash. If a ranger is around you will get a scolding.
Lake Temescal Park is a pleasant park with a nice layout and stunning views. However, I wish it were larger and had more trails and open space to explore. It's a popular destination, but sadly, the pollution from trash left after gatherings is disheartening. Additionally, the decreasing access to swimming in the lake each year is unfortunate, as it could be a fantastic spot for beach activities, leisurely swims, and enjoying the outdoors with activities like bird-watching and fishing.
My wife and I really enjoyed our visit. We were a bit surprised to see quite a few people @ park on a Friday morning! Weekends ? Imagine?
Lovely mountain dwellers’ picnic spot with occasionally free parking
Easily accessible and fun park with a sand beach and swim area mid-way. Also a children's playground by the north entrance. On weekends you'll catch fishing on the far edge so it's good to wear sensible shoes especially if it's been wet. Restrooms: Usually clean and satisfactory Dog-friendliness: On a leash at all times Picnic area: First come first serve but some larger areas require further arrangements
Gem of a park in north Oakland. A huge beautiful lake for fishing and swimming and boating. Bathrooms, two different parking lots, side street access. Lots of picnic tables, a playground. Many trees perfect for climbing! Very close to 24 freeway for easy access but therefore a little bit noisy, and a bit of pollution from the traffic. Apart from that it's a wonderful park for a visit.
Good park with a short loop trail along the lake. Some parts of the trail are paved and some are not but easy to walk. Bunch of picnic tables and grills for picnic. Restrooms were not super clean.
Very nice park with walking and hiking trail with beautiful views around the lake. Good for fishing, having a small sandy beach area but it was closed due to blue green algae hazard. Alot of bbq n picnic areas. $5 entry n parking fee. Really fun for kids as there is play area as well. Restrooms are plenty n clean, and showers as well so you don’t need to worry for a clean shower after swimming.
Not crowded, scenic oak forest and lake, with walking paths, children's play area, ample parking, picnic areas, fishing pier, a small short creek and even a seasonal beach for swimming. A few redwood trees, also.
Been coming here since I was a kid! Beautiful park with fishing and reservable picnic areas.
