My family and I went on a tour of the Ten Chimneys back in July of 2022. Ten Chimneys is a beautiful place to visit! There are many fascinating stories to hear about the adored Broadway couple, Alfred Lunt & Lynn Fontanne. They offer 2 tours per day, we went on the second/last tour of the day. Everyone takes a shuttle bus from the meeting point to where the actual tour takes place, which was a nice accommodation. The docent who guided us throughout our tour was very educated on the lives of Alfred & Lynn, and the history of the Ten Chimneys. But despite her expertise in the Chimneys history, her abrupt & snooty demeanor negatively impacted our experience on the tour. She rushed us throughout the entire tour. Several times during the tour she scolded us, saying that we needed to walk faster and hurry up. Our walking speed was NOT the problem. The problem was the docent's poor ability to stay on track with her stories & not get side track but all of her extra anecdotes, and her overall poor time management skills. Plus with our tour being the final tour of the day there was no reason to make us feel so rushed on the tour. It's not like there was another group coming on the tour after us. But she rushed us because she apparently had some where to go immediately after the tour ended. She complimented us for the questions we asked on the tour but we didn't actually ask any questions because she instilled so much fear in us. For the price that we're charged for the tour, we should be able to enjoy the tour without feeling rushed. The docent was unfriendly & condescending. Overall, I recommend checking out the Ten Chimneys, but would also recommend that they get friendlier docents.
We had a great time! Docent was knowledgeable and pleasant! House was interesting and different, the love story backdrop was charming. Plenty of places to stop and rest. Was a wonderful view into another place and time. Great for a ladies day out!
Gorgeous estate nestled in the woods! Very inviting staff to welcome you and let you relax before your tour. Lots of amazing history, architecture, and scenery to take in. Really loved the breadth of knowledge the docents had. Never felt rushed, and we had plenty of time to ask questions. Getting to see inside the properties and outside was a real treat.
We were driving on the freeway, saw the sign for national historical site and decided to check it out. It was midday on a Monday. Not a national holiday. The place was closed . Very disappointed.Visited onWeekdayReservation recommendedYes
The story behind Ten Chimneys is fascinating and makes you want to learn more about the actors/artists who built it and decorated it room by room. The docents were very knowledgeable about the property, its eclectic and Scandanavian decor, and the long and prosperous careers of Alfred and Lynn. The property sits on several acres of rolling hills and includes a nature trail and a gift shop.
Very educational and fun at the same time!
I went to this place wanting to take a tour ... but, I found that you must make an appointment before to get to enter here, that children are not allowed. The entry age is 12 years old. So that you organize yourself well before visiting this place. The little and nothing I saw was the gift shop, a very interesting place, and the women's bathrooms. very clean and a wonderful decoration...
Great historical home and outbuildings. Two hour tour with very informative docents. If you like theater you will love this home of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$31+
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Joyce and Carol through the site. Just loved all the decorative arts at the house and how the original owners enjoyed their summers there. Such a peaceful and beautiful place to be! There is so much to look at and appreciate that one could spend hours there just gazing at everything. We did the full estate tour that lasted two hours. It was wonderful and we recommend this as a great place to stop and visit! Will definitely go back for another visit!
It is a unique and wonderful experience. If you have a love for theater, you must not miss this tour. Price for entry: $35.00 Ticket type: Full estate tour
