My son was forceable checked in while NOT in a crisis today. I was told that if I did not consent that they would get a court order and report me. I was told this by THREE people including the doctor. My son has a FULL-TIME doctor, case worker, and counseling that he does due to a previous stay at another hospital. The doctor brought TWO BIG male nurses down to transport my son. My son is not a violent person and would have went since he knew there was no way out. When I told the doctor I was calling his doctor, his response that there is nothing his doctor can do for him and he would not speak to my son's doctor. I do not know when my son will get out. I am trying to get him removed before anything happens to him. I was completely shocked out unprofessional, rude, and how they would not give us any options at all except his has to be keep. When son voiced his opinion, the doctor told him if he didn't stop, he would keep him even longer. My son is 15. With his last stay his only stay before today, my son requested to go because he felt he needed help. Today he felt like he was being punished for have a non-crisis moment and being punished for having anxiety and depression.
My father-in-law stayed in Terrell State Hospital on two different occasions. They were both lengthy stays and he did receive the care he needed.
This place should be thoroughly investigated. I don’t know how they expect the mentally Ill to heal in an environment like this. Staff is unprofessional, there has been several reports of abuse, & this established is extremely underfunded.
Never in a million years would I ever recommend anyone being put into this facility. Took my child there who has been in the middle of a crisis downward spiral. Very emotional time for my child and I and they were the most uncaring cold non-attentive non-listening people I have ever known to work at a medical facility. My child could hear them discussing her and her conditions and medications and how unbelievably callous these people were. I'm beyond thankful they didn't keep her so she was able to get help she needs elsewhere by professionals who care about the patients.
So just to be clear, I have never visited this facility. But while working in West Virginia, I visited the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asymum. It is no longer in operation, but is open to the public for tours. Historic and Paranormal. While touring I found this picture from a sister facility in Terrell, Tx. I'm assuming this is the same hospital, but with newer buildings on site. The other picture is of the facility in West Virginia, which dates back to before the Civil War. Tour guides explained the practices which took place here. Hard to believe what went under the guise of medicine back then. Electroshock, Labotomies, and water submersion, just to name a few. They even said there was a portable electroshock machine used on misbehaving children. I know times were different back then, but still sad to hear. Anyone wanting a nonbias historical account of how asylums operated should visit this facility Trans Allegheny Lunatic Assylum. Tours are reasonably priced.
This facility wasn't that great. Not that many staff actually cared about the patients staying in Terrell State Hospital. Most of the staff were there for the money. One of the staff were yelling at me and putting me in my room for 5 minutes over ridiculous reasons. I don't recommend anyone coming to this facility.
I’ve been here 2 times and I can tell you it doesn’t help! I was in here once for 2 weeks.. all they did was push meds on me and then let me go! It didn’t help me at all because I got admitted again for 2 months! And again pushed all this medicine on me, they got me to what they think is “stable” and let me leave:. Glad I left but didn’t help at all! If you’re thinking about going here or putting someone else in here. DON’T! Look into better hospitals for actual help!
Terrible place. I had post Partom depression and doctor recommended to admit me to a hospital to get on medication. I wasn’t aware of the terms I wasn’t aware everything was going to be taken from me and I was going to be treated as if I were ill. Certain nurses were nice but one of the nurses were really rude when I asked for Tylenol because of my c section pain. Very unprofessional staff some and very neglectful of the patients. Do not send your loved ones here and do not admit yourself here. They do nothing to help you and they ignore you with any issues you may have. Take yourself or your family elsewhere.
In all honestly , this place does not benefit anyone with a mental illness . Was there 30 or 35 days . First 10 days in what seemed to be a normal ward . The main problem was psychiatrist and his his team evaluates you. I walked in a room with maybe 6 people surrounding me on a large table : felt like and interrogation. The head psychiatrist rarely , if ever , made eye contact with me . He truly looked like he did not want to be there . Very generic questions he asked , showed no emotion . Then I was sent to the medical unit , for 21 days . That place was awesome . Doctors showed more concern . Nurses very attentive . Not sure they have the medical unit/ward anymore
I've been to this place twice and both times I was on suicide watch for the first week and I absolutely loved one of the nurses there Annette and the two ladies that have a class printed me all kinds of coloring pages..most of the staff were friendly and helpful but some of the other people there were somewhat scary...as long as you are not ugly hateful or combative you shouldn't really have a problem...
