In the woods near Lake Michigan and Duck Lake State Park is the pottery studio of Peter F. Johnson, known locally as "Peter the Potter."
For over forty years he has created pottery, which is lead-free and ready for the dishwasher and the microwave.
Peter is a native of Amherst, Massachusetts. He spent his youth in coastal Maine and northern Vermont and relocated to Whitehall, Michigan, in the early seventies.
He is a graduate of Albion College, Albion, Michigan, where he studied ceramic arts with Richard Leach. He taught pottery in the Albion College adult education program and at Alfred University, New York, where he obtained his masters in fine arts.
Besides sculptural, outdoor pieces, some on a large scale, he creates functional forms from dinnerware to large bowls, birdbaths to lamps and sinks.
His pottery can be found at his studio showroom, the Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven, and the White River Gallery in Montague.
