Description

Originally named “The Crossbow”, “The Barkley Restaurant” opened in 1951 at the corner of Huntington Drive and Fremont in South Pasadena, California. In 1993, the restaurant was purchased by the late radio humorist, Roger Barkley and was renamed "The Barkley Restaurant". In 1997, former waiter Carlos Quezada and busboy Luis Cruz purchased "The Barkley Restaurant". Soon after in 1999, a sandwich on the menu was named Award-Winning Basic Barkley after winning the “Best in L.A.” award by the Los Angeles Magazine. This friendly neighborhood restaurant is a favorite to both locals and out-of-towners, where customers feel right at home at its graceful curving semi-circular full bar and tables with neatly folded napkins and sparkling glasses. “The Barkley Restaurant” has been featured in many different publications, newspapers, magazines, blog spots, and other food reviews on the web. South Pasadena Mayor David Sifuentes proclaimed June, 17th 2009 “The Barkley Restaurant” Day in the city of South Pasadena. Adding to “The Barkley Restaurant’s” history, San Gabriel Valley native brothers Daniel and Frankie De La Torre purchased the restaurant in 2012. Allying with Johansen sisters Corina "Bug" and Priscilla (also San Gabriel Valley natives), they continue to provide outstanding service, preserving and enhancing the tradition of warm hospitality and generosity that this restaurant has delivered through the decades.

my first impression was that it is quite dark, with all the wood paneling. It is in dire need of a remodel, the booths are torn and there must have been duct tape where I sat, that had rolled up - I thought I was sitting on my purse strap. Too dark to see what exactly it was. The toilet tank is missing the lid. Quite lively for a Tuesday evening, most looked like "regulars", and a bit of an older crowd but nice atmosphere. The band was awesome!!! I counted 14 musicians. It would be amazing if there was a dedicated area for the band. The breading on my fish could have used another minute, to fully cook the breading, but both fish and fries were served hot. And malt vinegar was provided, as well as plenty of tartar sauce.
I have never eaten here, I go for the music and sometimes have a beer. Very good staff, and eclectic music choices that are playing on the weekends at 9:00PM. A lot of people dining at that time as the kitchen is open until 10:00PM, if you want to talk you just sit in the other room. Vinyl booths, several rooms and it is great for parties.
The customer service was great. The bartender was very friendly and welcoming. The food, not so much. I had the fried fish sandwich with onion rings. The fish didn't have much flavor, I even tried to add tartar sauce and buffalo sauce. Still didn't help. The onion rings were good. My husband had the steak quesadilla. The flavor wasn't there, very bland. The french fries were warm, not hot, so that didn't help. I had a margarita, not tasty, at all. They have live music in the evenings, but we didn't experience that as it was 5:30 PM. They are a cash only business. They don't take credit cards. We wanted to support a black-owned business. Unfortunately, we're not encouraged to return.
Sunday night jazz was great. Bartender was very friendly- delightful. Just wish i had known about “Cash only” - policy seems antiquated… but NO cover charge, ample free parking will definitely be going back soon.Food: 4/5
During the week, the Barkley is basically a 60s era neighborhood dive bar. Fri-Sun, however, they have regular no-cover live jazz which is worth the trip. Save the drive into LA and catch some quality weekend jazz here. Parking: Small lot, but street parking available around both sides of the corner.
Great old school place! Very chill! Haven't had a bad bartender there. Make sure you bring cash, or you can use the available ATM.Food: 5/5
Food was good, but I didn't like your method of payment. You only accept cash payment. And since i didnt had cash with me. I had to use your atm machine to withdraw cash to pay for our food me and my friend and husband ate. I was so disappointed. As we are living in the time of technology. Where every restaurant accepts debit cards and credit cards. You need to update with the new payment technology. Were in 2023 year.
The best jazz bar I’ve been to in LA County. This place is like home, friendly staff, amazing music, good drinks, and good food all in an old world setting that is becoming increasingly hard to find. Hope this place never changes.
Met some friends for drinks. Dirty martini. I also ordered the nachos. I thought the nachos were really good. They had a DJ, playing some really cool tunes.Food: 4/5
This restaurant, formerly known as the Crossbow, has been in my area for decades. The food was delicious, large portions, and very reasonably priced. They are now a cash-only restaurant. This is the place to go if you like live jazz. They have a jazz band that performs three nights a week and they have a comedy show on Tuesdays in their back room.
