This was mansion number two of three that I had a chance to visit while staying in Newport. This mansion, just like The Elms, is breathtakingly beautiful inside, and the architecture is spectacular. Make sure you download the "Newport Mansion" app if you are doing a self guided tour, so you can get details about each room and the people the Vanderbilts that lived in mansion many years ago. Once you are done with the tour, you end up in the gift shop where you can find plenty of great gift ideas. The grounds surrounding the mansion are nice but not as impressive as The Elms, in my opinion. Overall, this place is definitely worth checking out and should be added on your list to do while visiting the area.
Absolutely amazing experience! Would highly highly recommend. Entry ticket was very affordable and the "palace" is absolutely beautiful. The estate is fantastic and the interiors are stunning. The place has been maintained very well and the folks there are very knowledgeable about the area. Wish we had some more time to spend there - would block out 2-3 hours for a fun visit. Make sure to spend some time on the walkway / bridge area.
A really gorgeous place that’s quick to tour without the audio guide. I walked through in about an hour and really took my time to look at everything. The ceilings are gorgeous and you can see the historical impressions in the walls and columns. The view outside is gorgeous especially at the upper level of the house. There’s this huge level that overlooks the water and it is gorgeous. Sadly, it’s blocked off by red rope. I understand the safety reasons for it since it’s a huge open wall to the water, but it was disappointing how far back the rope was. Otherwise, I got a good video of everything. At the end there’s a little gift and souvenirs shop that’s a bit on the pricey side, but ofc it goes into maintaining this great community space. So it’s worth a little something to take home.
Highly recommended! I visited the Breakers Mansion in Newport, RI a few months ago and it was absolutely breathtaking! I’ve toured many mansions before, but this is now my favorite place! The setting on the Atlantic Ocean is so beautiful and peaceful! I did the self guided tour and I very much enjoyed it! There was no rush and I could walk around at my own pace! I loved hearing about the history of the mansion and the Vanderbilt family! I also wandered around the gardens for an hour or two. Just breathtaking! I found delightful souvenirs in the gift shop and I finished up with lunch at the darling little cafe. It was a fun half day touring this lovely historic home! Newport is one of my favorite places to visit and I can’t wait to go back to visit this beautiful home and town!
We went through the mansion as it was included in a group tour we were doing of the area. This is a self guided tour using either an app that you download or reading a pamphlet. Very opulent mansion owned by the Vanderbilt's. You walk through many of the rooms and see their way of life. Leave time to walk around the outside because the gardens are beautiful. Also, look at the incredible designs under the outside patios
We had a great time exploring The Breakers this week. We want to particularly thank Karen Kerins, the wonderful guide and expert we met during our visit. I was fascinated by the Butler’s Pantry…despite how peaceful the room was you could almost feel the hustle and bustle of the room and how it was used during this age - but as we learned more from Karen about the space, she brought fascinating context and even more life into these stories. She is so knowledgeable, kind, funny and passionate about what she does…and informed our next mansion visit that day - Marble House. Would highly recommend exploring these pieces of history on your trip to Newport. We felt the self guided tour options were well organized, and enjoyed the optional scavenger hunt in each room. The cafe at The Breakers was quite nice - immaculately clean and cared for, with beautiful plants and mosaic tables inside - calming greenhouse feel. We enjoyed the snack and lunch options the cafe offered. Highly recommend a trip here, and thank you again to Karen!
Great history to this historic building. Easy walking distance from the Main Street Thames. The home is clean and staff was personable. You can choose 3 out of the 4 mansions in a package for $46. It’s a great value. With mansions you are going to find stairs. They aren’t steep but quiet a few. At the top there are places to seat. The Breaker our first stop has a cafe onsite. It’s a pick up and pay setting. The chairs were comfortable and the views were nice. Overall a great way to pay your time.
This mansion is Amazing! I didn’t know such property exist in the U.S. large massive floor plan. All interior design was influenced by France and Italy. I enjoyed walking around with the self guided tour from the App. I love the terrace balcony on the 2nd Level which has amazing ocean view. I am glad this building was maintained so well for the new generation to visit. We booked Hunter House Tour in advance so they offer us free upgrade to trio visit ticket.
This is such an iconic symbol of the guilded age. Its pure opulence. Such a beautiful home!! The tours are well done but for those who dont want to listen to audio also have a written synopsis. Good child's scavenger hunt, beautiful great lawn. The ticketing here is busy so might be better purchased at Marble House or The Elms. A good stop for early in the day.
Beautifully restored and maintained, the summer cottage more like a palace of the wealthy Vanderbuilts, 1800's opulence. Other mansions nearby like The Elms, also a very amazing look into the past. Even my 16 year old granddaughter was super interested in all the details. No strollers allowed, though.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$21–30
