The Capitol Theatre

Description

The Capitol Theatre, designed by noted architect Thomas Lamb, opened on Wednesday, August 18, 1926 as a dignified playhouse with great decorative beauty and luxurious comfort. The open letter to Port Chester residents published in the newspaper that week boasted that it would contain “the only theater refrigerating system in Westchester County.” The grand opening, which included a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” by a ten-piece orchestra and a showing of Sea Wolf, sold out all of its seats (then 2,000), and had to turn hundreds away.

People traveled from near and far to see shows at The Capitol. Hollywood kept the theater going for decades with films like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Taming of the Shrew. Enthusiasts could pay as little as 5 cents to see a double-feature Sunday matinee.

1970s: ROCK AND ROLL
By the late ’60s, the tone had changed. Movies were out and live music was in. The theater was renovated as a psychedelic performance space, and it hosted just about every major rock and roll act of that time period. Under the direction of rock promoter Howard Stein, the likes of Janis Joplin, Traffic, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead all graced the Port Chester stage during its heyday. By the early ’70s, however, the theater was shut down due to a new village ordinance that prohibited live entertainment after 1 a.m. It was at this time that Mother Nature became the sole owner of The Capitol Theatre. The roof decayed, and pigeons made the stage their new home. The theater remained dark until the early ’80s.

1983: CHANGING HANDS
In 1983, The Capitol Theatre was purchased by local developer Marvin Ravikoff and a new round of renovations began. On Wednesday, March 7, 1984, The Capitol Theatre was open for business again. Only a quarter of the theater was filled for its grand opening performance of Misalliance that night, but Ravikoff had no doubt the revived theater would be a success. In 1984, The Capitol Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Capitol Theatre was mainly used to put on plays and musicals during the mid-’80s, and it underwent continuous renovations for several years. There was a brief resurgence of rock concerts in the early ’90s when well-known acts like Phish and Blues Traveler visited the Port Chester stage. However, due to the poor economy at the time, it was difficult for any theater to thrive, and the small size of The Capitol no longer appealed to top-name entertainment. Ravikoff turned in a different direction and hoped to attract conventions and seminars instead. Eventually, the idea to turn the theater into a catering hall for weddings and formal events came about.

1997: CATERING HALL
Since 1997, the theater has hosted special events ranging from fund-raisers to bar mitzvahs. Removing the seats from the main floor allowed the theater to be transformed into a dance floor for weddings or a dining area for corporate blowouts. The Capitol’s stage made it unlike any other catering hall, and it lent itself to private performances from acts like Hootie and the Blowfish and Katy Perry.

In December 2011, Peter Shapiro announced that The Capitol Theatre would reopen with him at the helm, and the venue began yet a third round of serious renovations. Previously the owner of the legendary Wetlands Preserve in Manhattan and currently the owner of the Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg, Shapiro has no shortage of experience when it comes to running successful live music venues. He planned to breathe new life into the historical theater—with state-of-the-art light, sound and video systems, and new carpets, repainted walls and upgraded bathrooms.

The Capitol Theatre, partnered with concert promoter The Bowery Presents, reopened in September 2012 as Westchester’s new premier rock palace.

We recently went to a concert at the capitol theatre and had a really good night! Getting in was really quick and easy. The venue itself was small but really pretty. It’s capacity is about 1800 people I think it said so it was definitely a different concert experience. I’ve been to some smaller venues and was pleasantly surprised that my feet didn’t stick to the floor the whole night. The drink pricing was also more reasonable than other venues I’ve been to. They had some food choices such as popcorn and waffles!? I had already eaten so I didn’t get any food. I got a modelo to drink and it was really bad. Usually I like it a lot and this was really sour/bitter tasting. Also something I think is important is that I guess it has some sort of AC in it but it wasn’t very cold inside. It was mid 90s outside so I wasn’t sure if I should wear shorts/pants if the ac was cranked or not. I went with shorts and was so glad I did because I was quite warm inside. Also, not sure if this was artist preference or theater but they were pretty strict about not recording the show on your phones.
I love the Capitol theater. Despite it's compact and tall design, it can host 1,800 people, enough to host high level bands. Even seats in the balcony are close to the stage, making it possible to see the performers with ease. It's cozy, good acoustics, excellent dynamic illumination, easy to get in and out. A large MTA commuter parking makes it easy to park nearby for free, just 5 minutes walk. Last time I was here in October 2022 Jeff Beck did one of his last beautiful concerts here. This time it was ZZTop, another memorable concert of a band close to my heart. Highly recommended!
The Capitol Theater is an awesome venue with great sound and great seating options. You can sit up in the balcony and get a cool perspective of the band and light show. Or you can be down in GA on the floor, which is fun to dance and mingle. The staff are all very nice and I like how they sell snacks at the bar and at a downstairs booth. I would recommend seeing any show here.
This is one of my favorite venues in the three states where I frequent concerts. I saw the always amazing Styx there, go see them if you have a chance. The staff is extremely friendly and seem to be proud of this theater that was built in 1926. It is amazingly ornate, beautiful, and well preserved with a full marble staircase going up to the second floor. There is a large bar in the building and smaller bars located upstairs and downstairs. They offer very easy access to all seats and the theater is small enough to make for an intimate experience. Although expensive at $25, there is parking directly across the street and there is a restaurant right beside the entrance the venue. I love it!
Saw primus here last year and it was pretty awesome. Bathrooms are upstairs. Recently, I saw a podcast taping there and had seats upstairs. Very tight upstairs. You have to get up to let people out of the row. Beer selection is great. Staff was very nice. Smoking section is big, but can pack up at concerts.
Small but great venue! Definitely a must-see for any deadheads out there - Garcia’s the attached bar is full of incredible Jerry memorabilia. Venue itself is a lot of fun - good sound, no bad views, relatively reasonable ticket prices though that depends on the act, obviously.
Phenomenal historic venue. Spacious seats, reasonably priced drinks. Will be back!
One of the last music institutions left on the East Coast. Showcase of music of all genres. Clean facilities and easy parking close to the theatre.
George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic Not just Knee Deep With a groove out only guide we shall all be moved
Pat and Neil were amazing. In 2023 they were just as good as they were the first time I saw them in 1982. The Capital Theatre is a wonderful venue.
