We continue to work independently and collaboratively with other institutions to advance progress in research for children with food allergies.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Division of Allergy and Immunology has continued to expand. Research is underway to evaluate a number of allergic conditions, including food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma.
The Food Allergy Center at CHOP:
- Provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of allergic diseases as one of the largest pediatric allergy groups in the region. We care for patients from the Philadelphia area and around the word. Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and support staff work collaboratively to ensure the highest quality care and research.
- Operates the largest food challenge program, the gold standard for the diagnosis of food allergy.
- Conducts desensitization trials, including oral, epicutaneous (through the skin) and using adjunctive medications for children of all ages.
o The largest clinical site in the United States for epicutaneous therapies.
- Participates in basic science research in the mechanisms of food allergy.
o Funding from FARE, iFPIES, NIAID, NIDDK, NIH
- Collaborates in genetic studies on the etiology of allergic conditions.
o Identified the first genes for food allergy
- Works to identify novel testing methods for non-IgE mediated food allergies
o Identified new mechanism for development of food allergy with the potential for new therapies
- Participates as a member of NIH Consortium for Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Enhances care through translational research from the bench to the bedside to allow for cutting edge, high quality, research-based practice for patients with IgE-mediated food allergy, Food Protein-induced Enterocolitis and Eosinophilic Esophagitis.
- Collaborates across disciplines and subspecialties within The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, including the Division of Gastroenterology and the Division of Dermatology.
