Training In The Martial Arts-
The mental aspects of the martial arts depend on attitude. A positive frame of mind that enables a person to overcome limitations. (Most limitations are self imposed and are nothing more than a preconceived notion.) Maintaining a positive frame of mind is a discipline that prevent the self defeating thought patterns from entering into awareness. A centered frame of mind doesn't allow negative pre-occupation to defeat ones-self in the depths of his spirit.
The martial artist is trained to allow his inner strength, teamed with self confidence to guide him. He learns to trust and listen to his true self, the thoughts that come from the heart to guide and protect him. He doesn't allow his emotions or ego to lead him. The ego is much to fragile and the emotions are easily fooled.
The lessons learned in studying the martial arts are great and many. They pour over into every aspect of life, from health awareness to the awareness of peoples feeling's and intent round you.
It is true that the martial arts build strength, agility, coordination and endurance. We learn to increase our awareness, to center ourselves and to control our emotions. We learn to set goals and to achieve them through discipline. Along with these there must be a understanding of principles and philosophies. The martial arts instills in us humility, honesty, concern for others and patience. It develops the mind and strengthens the body. It teaches us to concentrate on spiritual values rather than martial values. A person involved in the martial arts will become physically tough to withstand rigorous training, but should, in turn, develop into a gentle person. A weak person will become strong and a strong person will become calm. This is achieved through continuous training which produces the softness of sensitivity, good judgment and high moral character. Given the right direction, a sufficient amount of time, discipline and perserverance, all goals can be obtained.
