Mission

Phillip and Dennis Ratner

Construction and endowment of the Museum are being funded by Dennis and Phillip Ratner and a group of family and friends who chose to join this under-taking at the inception. Future gifts by individuals are welcome.

PHILLIP RATNER

THE ARTIST IS NOTED FOR HIS FIVE SCULPTURES AT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY AND 40 SCULPTURES AT ELLIS ISLAND.

OTHER PERMANENT COLLECTIONS INCLUDE WORKS AT THE SMITHSONIAN, THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT.

IT IS MOST UNUSUAL FOR AN ARTIST TO HAVE A MUSEUM PERMANEANTLY DEDICATED TO THIS WORK DURING HIS LIFETIME AND THEN SHARING THAT MUSEUM WITH COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF OTHER ARTISTS. .IN 1984, MR RATNER WAS INSPIRED TO OPEN THE FIRST OF TWO MUSEUMS, ONE IN ISRAEL AND ONE IN THE WASHINGTON, DC AREA WITH HIS COUSIN DENNIS RATNER.

WITH DEGREES FROM THE PRATT INSTITUTUE AND AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, RATNER TAUGHT IN THE WASHINGTON, DC AREA FOR 23 YEARS, AND AT THE SAME TIME BUILDING HIS REPUTATION AS AN INTERNATIONAL ARTIST. NO LONGER TEACHNG, HIS STUDENTS FROM AS LONG AGO AS THE EARLY 60’S STILL TRACK HIM DOWN AND SPEAK OF THE INFLUENCE HE HAD ON THEIR LIVES.

A PRIVATE COMMISSION FOR A STATUE OF DANTE HAS LED HIM TO CREATE COLLECTIONS IN THE FORM OF CHESS SETS BASED ON THE DIVINE COMEDY AND MAJOR FIGURES FROM THE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE. MORE OF THESE PROJECTS ARE IN THE PLANNING STAGE SUCH AS ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

HE HAS LONG BEEN INTERESTED IN HEALING AND MYSTICISM AND WAS A KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT A WORLD GATHERING OF THE PARAPSYCHOLOGICAL COMMUNITY. IN 2008 HE BEGAN A SERIES OF SCULPTURES FOR THE NATIONAL REHABILIATION HOSPITAL IN THE NATION’S CAPITOL. THESE SCULPTURES WILL INVOLVE THE HEALING ARTS WITH SPIRITUALITY.

DENNIS RATNER

In addition to his involvement with the Ratner Museum,
Dennis Ratner serves as co-founder and CEO of Ratner Companies, located in Vienna, Va. Ratner Companies operates Hair Cuttery, company-owned and franchised, Hair Cuttery UK, BUBBLES, Salon Cielo and Spa, ColorWorks and Salon Plaza. With nearly 1,000 salons, the privately-owned company employs more than 10,000 Stylists across 14 states and the United Kingdom.

Also an active member of his community, Dennis contributes to many organizations including the National Zoo, the Capital Children's Museum, the Whitman Walker Clinic and the United Jewish Appeal of Greater Washington. In recent years he has also directed a major fundraising campaign for the Miracle Network of Children's Hospital that resulted in donations of nearly $400,000.
