The Veterinary staff of the Florida International Teaching Zoo is offering a Zoo Animal Management program with Veterinary Assistant Certification beginning September 2013.
The program will consist of academic lectures coupled with hands on experience with the Teaching Zoo animals. Lectures will be held Sunday and Monday nights from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Teaching Zoo classroom located in Bushnell, Florida. Lab times will be a minimum one day weekly, 9 AM to 5 PM at the Teaching Zoo and one weekend public tour day per month.
Lecture topics include zoo management /husbandry aspects of animals from apes to zebras to eagles to snakes to crocodiles to big cats to giraffes. Lectures will cover animal diseases, husbandry, and nutrition, medical treatment, housing/exhibit design, emergency procedures, anesthesia, sanitation, fecal analysis, public management and others. Graduates will receive certification from Florida Teaching Zoo.
Past graduates are currently employed at zoos, wildlife parks, veterinary clinics, wildlife rescue facilities, circuses, and state wildlife/game departments
The tax deductable tuition fee is $1000 per term (4 terms per year). Monthly payment plans may be requested at $350 per month.
Class size is limited to 15 students per year. We believe in more hands- on, intensive and personal instruction with “ way cool” zoo animals than any other Zoo School. Check out the animals on our website.
Due to liability and state restrictions only adults 18 years and older may apply. All applicants must be in good health and free of any zoonotic diseases. Due to the unique nature of work with zoo animals, certain handicap situations are not permissible.
Contact: Dr. Mark D. Wilson, DVM- Teaching Zoo Director- 352-867-7788 for a private zoo tour.

Sweet, little collection of unique animals! Black Jaguar! Spotted Hyena! Lovely collection of birds - Hornbills, Turaco, Ne Ne Goose, etc. JR was a nice tour guide. Very kind to the animals, and very informative! A bit rustic and dated, but charming. The animals are very well cared for. Hector the Patas Monkey is just amazing with a Blowpop!
Cool selection of animals, birds and rodents. Limited availability means you have to get your timing right as they only allow 12 per group per tour and there are presently only 3 tours a week 2/3/4pm on Sat.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
Very unique experience! Highly Recommend! Learned a lot. Thank you
Spotted hyenas have always been my favorite animal, so coming here and just being in their presence was pretty mind blowing. They’re massive and so beautiful, you can see the power in their eyes when they stare at you. This is not a zoo animal, and our hats are off to the hardworking men that take care of these animals and spread knowledge on them. Thank you for everything you guys are doing!!
One of the best experiences at a zoo! They are phenomenal to the animals and the amount of knowledge that was shared with us was fantastic and clear and we were given opportunities to ask questions. They name their animals and truly care about the continuance of all species and helping other zoos!! I highly recommend and shall go again!
Nice little zoo. Friendly people, cool animals. Wear clothes that will cool you down. Hat and sun glasses a must. Dirty feet if wear flip flops. About an hour long tour. Perfect for the money.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10

Down home awesome experience, highly educational and fun! We arrived and were hesitant to continue, but enjoyed our tour immensely! Everyone should experience this amazing variety of animals and educational time!
What an amazing pre birthday gift for my boys. The owner gave them a free photo OP with Jackie! We had a great time!
Certainly a little different than we had expected, it's more of a tour than a place to wander. Expect the whole thing to take about an hour depending on how many questions people have. There were a few animals we were hoping to see that weren't there. Specifically the tigers and couple others you may see in the pictures. From what we gathered it's because of the fact they are a teaching zoo and the animals do get moved to other zoos. Overall, the value and experience is pretty solid with lots of good information packed into an hour.
