Seeking to alleviate childhood hunger by providing nourishment on the weekends to children in Sheridan County, Wyoming who need it.
Food insecurity has become a national and local issue. In Sheridan County, approximately 40% of children are on free and reduced lunch programs. Though often hidden from their peers and other community members, teachers are very aware that many children are relying heavily on the food they receive during school.
In the 2010-11 school year, members of the community, now officially called, "The Food Group" began to help Sheridan children who go hungry on a consistent basis. Working as a grassroots effort, community members developed a small pilot project with the support of individuals, foundations, donors, churches, and the schools. The goals were relatively simple: develop a "pack" of food containing whole meals that any child would be able to utilize to feed themselves and even a sibling or two over the weekend. This "backpack" model has been used successfully in many other communities in Wyoming and nationally.
The Food Group initially anticipated distributing bags of food to several dozen children weekly in a couple schools. However by collaborating with teachers and school administrators to identify children in need, the requests soon poured in from additional schools. Within three months, The Food Group was feeding between 100 and 120 children a week. As of march 2017, The Food Group serves 480 students each week in Sheridan County School Districts #1 and #2 from preschool to high school.
By purchasing food from Ridley's, The Food Group provides healthy weekend meals for students. This program is anonymous, open to any child and provided at no cost. The Food Group operates as a local non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
