Rain, Shine, Sleet or Snow the Game Goes On!
A SHORT HISTORY
The FROST BOWL is arguably the toughest outdoor winter volleyball challenge in the world. Founded in 1990 at Ray Bowkley's home court to help die-hard volleyball players survive the long, cold winter until the beginning of spring outdoor volleyball. The Ray Bowkley Volleyball Emporium, was the perfect venue for the inaugural event. Built in Ray's backyard, many features were added over the course of several years. First, the court was excavated, tons of high-quality Jersey white sand was imported, 2x4 boundary lines were ripped precisely and spiked into the ground. A 40-foot tall light pole was raised, 12-foot high metal fences were erected behind both service areas and the tighest net ever created was set in concrete with steel cables. At the time it was the finest private outdoor court in New Jersey.
The venue moved to the Basking Ridge Country Club in 1995 for FROST BOWLs V to XIV and the hospitable crew allowed us to play on their two wind-swept courts while graciously delivering the subs and beer down to the court in a golf cart. John Fenwick provided a stack of wood for the world-famous burn barrel, which kept us plenty toasty. Yeah, we were living the high life.
A new and exciting era began with FROST BOWL XV hosted at Lebanon Twp. Memorial Park in all its frozen glory. Attendance continues to rise as the word spreads and Facebook makes it easier to keep in touch. FROST BOWL XXII drew a record crowd of 35 players.
The venue and format has changed over the years but ONE RULE REMAINS THE SAME. The FROST BOWL is played in rain, hail, sleet or snow and is NEVER rescheduled due to inclement weather! Only the strong survive. All others stay home! Long may the tradition of the FROST BOWL continue.
