The Funk Music Hall of Fame & Exhibition Center

About

To establish a home for the legacy of Funk music by acknowledging the artists who brought this art form to life while showcasing the Funk experience.

Description

The Funk Music Hall of Fame & Exhibition Center of Dayton Ohio (The Funk Center) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The Funk Center is being formed to provide a central location to house and display Funk memorabilia, hands on audio stations & kiosk, practice facilities for private music lessons, unique and meaningful audio arts programming for all children, to educate children in the Funk music genre, and to build a lifelong audience for Funk music. We plan to offer a dynamic and constantly-evolving program and exhibition space. Although we will incorporate all of the fine arts into our programs, our focus is on audio art. Most activities will be open-ended and enjoyed on a walk-in basis. The Exhibition Center/Museum will be staffed by working artists, and all structured activities will be led by master artist-teachers.

The Arts Education Partnership, in conjunction with the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, commenced a study last year to examine the impact of arts experiences on young people and to explore why and how young people were changed through their arts experiences. Evidence demonstrates that children with high levels of arts participation outperform "arts-poor" students by virtually every measure. This study, Champions of Change, found much evidence that learning in the arts helps develop habits that will support other disciplines, and that it can often reach at-risk students when other disciplines cannot. The arts provide young people with authentic learning experiences that engage their minds, hearts, and bodies. Arts education helps students learn; it can enhance creativity, self-discipline, and the skills and confidence necessary to meet the challenges encountered during their lives.

Saw the interview with Mark Akridge son of the legendary bassist Mark Adams of the funk group SLAVE very informal and educational on YouTube.Rhine McLiin former mayor of Dayton Oh. was the host
Very nice, well put together facility. I do think everything should be behind glass. Since everything isn't behind glass it kinda forces the staff to watch your every move to detour thief. I don't blame them because people do steal, but it's not comfortable to the customer. Overall it was a great visit, I loved the museum, great value.
Visited the Funk Center today traveling back home from Cedar Point and the Funk Center did not disappoint! Wonderful exhibits of priceless memories and Mr. Webb and his staff were absolutely fantastic! 5 Stars ..well worth the visit. Please call to make an appointment. This is a must see when you're in Dayton, Ohio.
Unfortunately they don't seem too serious about this museum. No parking, no photos allowed so you can't even entice friends to go help support it, no response to an email sent to the address listed on their site, and they are only open 3 days a week or so they say, but I went on a Saturday, one of their only open days and drove 40 minutes to go to it, and it was closed.. on a Saturday? With no reason posted. Seriously! The day most people would go.. really unfortunate they arent more serious about showcasing the Funk history, and getting the word out. i really was hoping to promote it, as i go to easily 60 museums a year at least 20 of them being music related and help let people know that they exist, but unfortunately my video will just be me and my sister showing up to a closed little store front... I was really hoping to let people know with a positive review, but I have a bad feeling about their future... I truly hope they get it together and learn from successful museums as to what works and what doesn't.
This was a complete waste of time! My boyfriend and I were so excited to visit the museum only to be turned away on a Saturday. What kind of museum is this? The owner was very rude and slightly threatening, yelling at my boyfriend as we walked away. I give this place 6 months or less if this is their example of customer service! Not even worth 1 star.
The Funk Music HOF & Exhibition Center gets a 5 star rating from me!! I traveled from OKC, OK to visit and it was well worth my time. I enjoyed seeing all of the artifacts. The pictures, actual costumes, personal instruments used by groups and solo artist as well as the bios that are on display are awesome. Learning the history behind the bands that came out of Dayton and surrounding areas as well as those that were actually credited for starting the Funk Music sound was enlightening. Last but not least, I want to give a special thank you to Mr. David Webb and one of his staff members that greeted me and two of my friends on 3/24/18. They were gracious and made us feel very welcomed! David met me one time over a year ago and has treated me like a friend since. As soon as we arrived at the door, David called me by name and welcomed us with professionalism and much courtesy. I recommend any lovers of Funk Music, music lovers in general, young or old, to take a tour of The Funk Music HOF & Exhibition Center in Dayton Ohio.
I visited the Funk Museum and I understood No pictures! :- there was plenty of parking and the staff was great!!! I just followed the rules of the organization. I didn't understand what the big problem was. Just follow the rules of any Museum!!!
Very enjoyable museum tour. Get the guided tour, it's definitely worth the $10. It's open by appointment only. Call and make an appointment!
Was very much looking forward to the opening but was very disappointed. Small, disorganized space and a lot of the memorabilia is not in good condition. No photography allowed and no access to the bathroom despite the fact that they require you to make what they call a “donation” the moment you walk in the door.
Wonderful experience! Parking was easy & it was no problem getting in. We were promptly greeted & began our thorough fun tour. Highly recommend!
