We specialize in the art of restoration and conservation of antiques.
Our goal is to maintain the original finish and patina. In doing so, we will have preserved the well maintained look so many of us love and appreciate.
Gilding
When gilded furniture and frames require restoration, repairs can be made. We use traditional recipe of rabbit skin glue and gesso.
A red or brown bole made from red clay is then followed by Gold leaf which is burnished to a high shine. Patina is then usually required so that the new work blends with original surfaces. We are also able to carry out Oil gilding which is a different process for laying gold leaf which cannot be burnished.
Wood Carving
Turned and carved elements are often the parts that really set off a piece of antique furniture, but they are also generally the most fragile and vulnerable. Replacing or repairing missing pieces with accurate copies will often make all the difference in a restoration project.
We also can apply our turning skills.
Restoration
Using the tools of the old world, we will restore any piece of fine furniture damaged by the elements or a careless mover. Fine furniture demands natural materials such as shellac and wax. There are no exceptions
French polish
We use traditional methods to make our own wax and shellac polishes. We are able to repair and revive original surfaces and refinish with our own specific methods.
Unsightly watermarks, ink staining, scratches and other surface damage can be reduced and blended. Shellac, or ‘French Polish’ is used when appropriate. This traditional finish which enhances the beauty of wood better than most modern finishes, is actually very durable and hard wearing. French polish can, however, be made even more durable by using a modified ‘heat resistant’ shellac as part of the polishing process. If a re-polish is necessary, we can use shellac and/or wax polishes. We are able to re-build what some would refer to as ‘patination’ to give the re-polished surfaces of antique furniture a more appropriate look.

We also provide lacquers in a variety of solid colors. These would include dull, satin or glossy finish.
