We came specifically for peach cobbler. Asked about it as soon as we sat down but they said they were out. We said okay and ordered lunch anyway. A few minutes later our waiter went over to the table behind us and asked if they wanted cobbler... The woman at the table asked what kind and when he said peach she said no thank you. So we perked up! Our cobbler hopes were alive again! He never came back to the table. We ordered 3 waters and a lemonade no sodas available he brought out 4 Arnold Palmers... I tried mine and it was delicious so I kept it not knowing it was $4. I know I already mentioned cobbler but they were alos out of shark and Mac and cheese. Not a big deal except when you're menu is already small. I had small chicken gumbo but 30percent of it was bones. I tried to muscle through it but gave up. Our experience was more of a 1 star but maybe it was just a bad day so I'll give it 2.
The bbq chicken lunch only came with 1 piece of dry chicken and a small scoop of potato salad. I left still hungry. Peach cobbler was pretty good. Ribs were tough & chewy. Service was good.Dine in: YesOutdoor seating: YesTakeout: Yes
OMG! OMG! The food took me back to childhood growing up in Summerville S.C. This place is a precious gem in Beaufort S.C. You feel like you know the staff they were so friendly and the shop next door is amazing..found some amazing skin care products. It was worth the trip all by itself and swamp water should be your drink of choice . Will be back!!
Amazing food and service! I’ll be back with the whole family! The gumbo was some of the best I've ever had, and I've had gumbo from Louisiana to the Carolinas. We also tried the peach cobbler, which was also decadent and highly recommended. A lot of people around us were ordering the ribs, and that looked wonderful as well. Ask about things that might not be on the menu given to you. Sometimes they can accommodate other foods such as mac-n-cheese or greens. On the walls around the restaurant are books, photos, and memorabilia of the area. The restaurant also provides catering services. This is well worth a stop!
We had such a great experience between conversation and photographing the space. I added my cornbread to my shrimp gumbo as well. YUMMMM
This was a huge waste of money! We went at 12:30. The fact that there was one car in the parking lot should have told us something! We were not greeted, it's self seating. Our waitress did not smile or talk to us unless we asked a question. We felt very unwelcome and I have no idea why we stayed. The food was just as bad as the service. My daughter and granddaughter got gumbo. They said it had an odd taste and asked them to take it off the bill. The manager tried giving all kinds of excuses for the odd taste. We live in SC, so we know what good seafood tastes like. My grandson got fried shrimp. It was pathetic. Little tiny baby shrimp and way over cooked. He was hungry so he just went for it. I got barbeque ribs. They were mostly fat. The cornbread was awesome. After taking the two gumbo's off, which we argued about, the bill was still $50.00. I was just plain mad. I hate spending money on bad food. It never did get busy, and when we drove past at lunchtime on Sunday, still no cars!
Enjoyed a lovely lunch in this sweet, slow moving little town. The sweet tea was delightful. Shrimp lunch superb.
A fantastic tour into Gullah food culture. Fried shrimp, shark and shrimp gumbo were fantastic. Even the green beans and potato salad were very good. The service is slow and small language barrier exists but this is a great experience to see what TRUE lowcountry food and life is like. Highly recommend it!
Gullah Grub on St Helena Island. Let me tell you what I had envisioned. The food marinating in some authentic African spices and special sauce. I couldn't wait to get here to taste this authentic "Grub". Because I just new it was going to be mouth watering! Well let me tell you... I ordered ribs, red rice and green beans. The red rice was hard dry and tasteless. The green beans was really good, the ribs were just ok. The flies were really bad inside..SMH...I guess I expected way too much. Needless to say, I wouldn't visit again. I gave one star because I had too.
Was so excited that this place was open when I was in town this time! The food was excellent. The portion sizes were appropriate and the taste was true to the Gullah traditional flavoring. The staff was super sweet and we spent time talking with the owner. Charming spot that makes you appreciate the heritage of this area. Will go back for sure.
