The Liberty Theatre Foundation is an organization passionate about the restoration of a downtown historic legend.
The Liberty Theatre Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization. Our goal is to restore and operate the historic Liberty Theatre located at 1010 Adams Avenue in La Grande, Oregon and recreate its early appearance.
The restored theater will serve the region as:
A center for performing arts and education
An historic and cultural resource
An economic hub for the entire region
A venue for speakers, music, art, dance and theatre
The Liberty Theatre opened as the Orpheum Theatre in 1910, operated as the Arcade from 1911 to 1930 and as the Liberty untill 1959 when it was remodeled for commercial purposes. Initially serving as a cultural venue for vaudeville, traveling theater, early movies and a varied dance and music performances, the Liberty last served as a movie theater with an historic ambiance.
Originally seating 632 patrons, The Liberty Theatre survived several remodels, yet retained an historic flavor with a distinguishing balcony and stage, wall decor and wool carpeting, radiators, and unique chandelier and lighting features. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and was a contributing structure in the 2001 nomination for the La Grande Historic District.
The mission of the Liberty Theatre Foundation, Inc. is to restore the facility for a Grande Encore!
