The Original Papa Nick's

About

Bringing fresh family made Italian food to go in beautiful Mars Hill, NC.

Description

Jerry and Lila Nikla founded The Original Papa Nick's in Miami in 1970. They moved here to Mars Hill, NC in 1988 to retire and fell in love with the mountains and people. Jerry and Lila opened a new Papa Nicks in 1991 and it was immediately a big hit with the locals and tourists alike. Due to Jerry's health, Papa Nick's closed in 1998. After a few years we realized Mars Hill needed a place to get quality fresh made pizza and Jerry and Lila's daughter Debi opened a take out version of Papa Nicks in 2002 with pizza in mind mostly. She quickly evolved her menu and has since added lots of amazing Italian dishes, hot subs, calzones and salads as well. In 2014 the space next door to the take out restaurant became available so now Papa Nick's has a dining room and full kitchen. She has not changed one single thing about her father's recipes from the pizza dough to the marinara and of course the garlic rolls he was so famous for. Our customers are like family to us and we make every dish with that in mind. Come out and see for yourself, have a seat in a our dining room or grab some take out and sit on the deck. See you soon!

"The Original Papa Nick's has been proudly serving home style Italian food for over 50 years! We are still family owned and operated and pride ourselves on quality ingredients and excellent service. Come on in and find out for yourself what our family can do for yours."

I'm half Italian. With that said, it seems that Papa Nick lost his edge. The ravioli..not that fresh. The meat sauce... my 5 year old niece is not Italian, but I think she could do better. Spend more than 10 minutes on this part. Even the salad...pink lettuce. Garlic knots... okay, but only 2 says it comes with 3. I do not want to sound mean, but if you are going to do ethnic food, you may want to bring in a person who actually understands this type of cooking. I recommend Gordon Ramsey. And he's not Italian. I've tried this place over and over, hoping for better. I'm out. BTW, cost for this was $30.
This is a small Mountain Pizza place if that’s amazing!! It’s off the beaten path, but well worth coming.Food: 5/5
Just okay, could be quite good with a little more effort. Glad they have vegan pizza and that part was generally good. But the crust was basically like white bread with almost no salt and no seasoning. It is airy which is good, just really could use some more seasoning and salt. Vegetarian options: Vegan cheese and lots of veggies
the food is good not great but its the atmosphere and overall small town charm of Papa Nick's that's most appealing. Very friendly staff, most desserts are made in house, parking is a little tough. Wheelchair accessibility: a bit of a tight fit but no restrictions otherwise
Ordered online for one pizza and one Stromboli. Said it would be ready in 40 minutes at 5:11 p.m. I got there 5 minutes ahead of time, let them know I was there. Time came and went, at 5:41 I went to the pickup window and said my order was supposed to be ready 30 minutes earlier, and was there a problem? The employee got the completed order from the top of some shelf. I asked how long it had been there. She said "around" 10 minutes. I saw one guy get his to go order and turned in a pager. I wasn't offered one, and the employee said "oh, they never gave you one?". She was the one I spoke to when I got there! I'd even ordered 2 pieces of pie from her also. I asked why couldn't someone have let me know, since I was standing outside in the heat by the pickup window? No answer, no apology, just a stupefied expression. I really wish employers would let their staff know a simple apology goes a long way. The food is good, but the experience ruined it. Addendum: 8/20/23 Owners response of "Poor randy" should tell you all you need to know about how much Papa Nick's respects their local customers. Sounds like they don't care. Their choice.
On multiple trips to Papa Nicks we have gotten different items. The pizza is consistently good. However, the ravioli was highly disappointing. It tasted like the premade ravioli and canned Alfredo sauce you get at the supermarket. Definitely didn't taste made from scratch. We will continue to get pizza, but probably won't dine in anymore.
Wonderful pizza and Italian restaurant with comfortable feel and friendly service. Pizza is really good as are the garlic knots. Staff went of their way to meet our needs. Will definitely be back.
Very convenient parking. Greeted as soon as we entered, not only by staff, but the heavenly garlic smell of an Italian restaurant! Friendly and obliging server, Jackie. Very good food, shells and meat sauce, eggplant parmesan, and a small pepperoni pizza, garlic knots. Reasonably priced. Dessert offered, sounded wonderful, but just couldn't do it. Pumpkin apple scented hand soap in the bathroom!! Great experience from start to finish!
Great place to eat in Mars Hill, NC. Had lunch with wife and daughter. My chicken fetticini was good but was not hot, not even warm. Still, I highly recommend it.Food: 4/5
We ordered pick up. It was about 15 minutes past estimated time . The most aggravating was the Greek salad for 10.95. It had black olives, green peppers, ricotta as a very very thin layer on top of nothing but lettuce . 4 small cherry tomatoes, 4 cucumber slices. 75% of salad was lettuce. We also ordered a pizza and calzone and for 54 $ we were very disappointed. Which is too bad because we live very close and hoped for better.
