Hand-painted, upcycled vintage and antique furniture. I use chalk, milk, metallic, and patina paints with various finishes. Ready-made and custom.
The Painted Cupboard (TPC) creates hand-painted furniture (with that classic New England feel!) that fills homes with treasures destined to become the heirlooms of your family’s future.
Owned and operated by artist Lucia Corwin, TPC specializes in chalk and milk paints (as well as the occasional acrylic paint when it can best enhance a project). Whether returning damaged goods to their former glory; re-imagining previously painted furniture into an up-cycled masterpiece; or painting something newly built from scratch…from solids to stencils and everything in between, Corwin’s techniques transform the pitiful into prideful...creating keepsakes at every turn.
Unique to TPC is its signature “Time Table” series—tables that feature a customizable clock face that displays the important times (and dates) of our lives: births, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, retirements…anything that marks something important to to you. These specialized gifts are available for custom orders. To learn more, keep an eye out for our soon-to-be-open Etsy shop (PaintedCupboardVT) or keep a lookout for info here and on TPC's forthcoming website.
Based in Southern Vermont in the bucolic New England town of Grafton, TPC ships nationwide and accepts commissioned work in all shapes and sizes.
So, welcome to TPC, where we’re turning painted treasures into your family’s future heirlooms. We so look forward to working with you.
** A Message From The Artist **
Welcome! So thankful you found me!
Having used latex paint all my life, when I discovered chalk and milk paints I was introduced to a whole new creative expression. Safe for the environment (they are low-VOC), entirely natural and with an ability to provide endless possibilities for creating washes, glazes, distressing, and interesting detail...I'm constantly surprised by the beautiful new things I can create with this one family of paint.
What makes milk paint so unique? It soaks into natural wood like the finishes you would find on old, painted antiques. And on second coats, it often flakes in random patterns, giving it an authentic, aged finish…or as I like to say, a unique "crackled goodness" that looks different from piece to piece!
On the other hand, and as you'd imagine, chalk paint provides a unique "chalky" finish. It can be layered by using washes and dry brushing so that a wonderful depth of color can be achieved.
Both paints can be finished to a lovely warm luster, using dark, clear, or white waxes.
Combining this artistry with my lifelong passion for antiquing, I enjoy searching for vintage pieces to repurpose and bring back to life.
