History of The Palace Restaurant & Saloon

Description

Stepping into The Palace Restaurant and Saloon is like stepping into a time when cowboys spent their nights drinking and gambling and enjoying the company of ladies of the evening.

Although now patronized by locals and tourists, the feel of the old West still lingers in the air, captured in the warm wooden floors, old plaster walls, tin ceiling and the original quarter sawn oak and cherry bar. It was fully restored to its former grandeur by Dave Michelson, owner, in 1996, and reflects the atmosphere it had in 1901.

Originally built in 1877, the original Palace was destroyed in the Whiskey Row fire of 1900. But the original bar remained – patrons picked it up and carried it out of the burning building. There on the street, the owners at the time continued serving beer and whiskey throughout the night. Locals and tourists can still belly up to the original mahogany bar for a drink or to admire its polished, gleaming surface.

An all American style restaurant with full lunch and dinner menus, The Palace also features a mini-museum with old photographs, posters of Hollywood films shot at The Palace and antique gambling and mining display.

“Gambling was a big part of our Western heritage,” said Michelson. “Some of the gambling pieces displayed are pieces that were used on Whiskey Row back in the turn of the century.”

The Palace Restaurant, located at 120 S. Montezuma St., is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The Palace is also home to Prescott original dinner theater, where the community can enjoy dinner and a show.

I was really looking forward to eating here but left disappointed. To start, the food wasn’t hot. The fish on the tacos was over fried and had been sitting for awhile. The steak bites were very tough. The fries were the only thing that was a little warm but were a soggy mess. Even the iced tea was a disappointment. You could tell it wasn’t fresh. It was very strong and bitter.
We had high expectations for The Palace and were excited to dine there.. When we entered, we found the historical settings captivating. From the tin ceiling, to the professionally assembled display of prospector’s tools, to the giant Prescott Whiskey Row collage, to the giant Arizona state flag hanging just beneath the huge skylight, and the wait staff in period garb, this place wreaks of Arizona history. But that’s where the “wow-factor” ends, and why we left disappointed. The food failed to live up to the hype. I ordered the Pack Mule Pastrami sandwich. The issue with the sandwich as you can see in the photo was they didn’t slice the bun in the center. There was less than 1/4 inch of bun to support the sandwich. When I tried to pick the sandwich up, the bottom was so greasy from the aioli the sandwich slid out of my grip and fell apart on the plate. This was no big deal, so I ate it with a fork and knife. But, the meat was excessively dry. My wife ordered two of the Whiskey Row Street Tacos appetizers to equal one entrée. $16 for 4 street tacos is steep; but that’s OK if they tasted great, but they didn’t. They were bland and only slightly salty. The best part of the meal was the shot peanut butter whisky I ordered. However, I had to remind the server twice to bring the shot of whiskey I ordered to the table. Service was slow, but the server was polite. We visited the Palace for lunch. From what the locals told us, the dinner menu is excellent. When we visit Prescott again, we might try The Palace for dinner. Regardless, it is worth popping in to look around. They did a great job in historical preservation.
Our waitress was amazing. We were 3rd in line when it opened, and by noon, it was steady with full saloon, and the resuraunt was about full. It was an amazing place to visit and learn about the history of this place. We will definitely be back to visit and eat again.Food: 5/5
What a FUN place to have lunch. Old western theme with plenty of authentic artifacts to see. Wandering can cost you an hour or more of pure enjoyment. If you love the Wild, Wild West, you’re gonna LOVE the Palace. Would have given all 5 stars, but they forgot my beer… oh well… figured it was the Lord sending me a message. LOLFood: 5/5
Stopped in for lunch in July, so a time when the crowds are a bit smaller. The Palace is a neat, western themed restaurant/saloon with all the authentic floors, walls, ceiling, and back bar taking you back over 100 years. The only thing missing is all the bad smells that would have been there, and maybe an unruly cow poke or two. The menu was decent, although I was a bit disappointed not to find a steak offering, nonetheless the food was pretty good and arrived very quickly. The wait staff was dressed in period clothing to keep the theme going and was very attentive and polite. A good lunch stop while taking in Prescott.
Luckily Greg recommended to drive there from Sedona, not super close but absolutely worth the trip. And when the weather is nice we had poring rain! the drive thought the mountains is amazing! The girls and bartenders look really cool!
I’m town for the Super Bowl, Fly Eagles Fly! Looks like it would be a foolish move to not come in the Palace Saloon while you are in or near Prescott, AZ. This place has an amazing decor and an awesome waitstaff. I usually sit at the bar, however, there were no open seats tonight because this place is so awesome. Have live music playing, which is nice while enjoying your meal. Tonight, I had Prime Rib, my go to. Was not disappointed! Was cooked to perfection and the price was reasonable too. My server, Crystal, was amazing. She is hustling out there and still killed it for me tonight. Her excellent service was appreciated. She and the rest of the gals look amazing in their old west server outfits. Come out and support your local restaurants and avoid chains! I highly recommend this place!
Interesting saloon/bar in the middle of downtown Prescott, could easily be a tourist trap, if it's not already one lol. I wasn't planning on coming here but some friends were nearby and I decided to pop on by and gave it a try. They have quite a list of cocktails and why not get a whiskey-based cocktail at Whiskey Row? I got the Peach Pecan Old Fashioned and boy this cocktail is sweeeeet, so don't be expecting a typical Old Fahioned. The beast burger sounded really good with a mash-up of game meat elk, boar and beef, so I decided to give that a go. I thought the burger itself was ok; it didn't taste or felt special or gamey or better than average in any means, but the fries were phenomenal. They are very thin, like the size of a shoestring kinda thin, but they are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside! Totally surprised me. I never had thin shoestrings fries that are like that; they are usually just kinda soggy or so crisp that they are almost like chips. So overall, not a bad place. Interesting decor, great location, good drinks and not bad food!
It was so cool to be inside a part of history. It has been around since the early 1900s. A local had recommended this spot seeing that I was visiting so I was just passing through and it didn't disappoint. They waitress were all dressed up like saloon girls. I ordered the pull pork slider with fries. It's only two and they are small but it was a good small lunch portion. Only issue I had was the waiter didn't bring me fries she brought me cold slaw. My BF don't like when I complain so he noticed when they brought it out I had walked to the bathroom when I came back from the bathroom he started sharing his fries with me.
The inside is very dark, but they did a good job with the whole saloon/old time vibe. Food was good, the fries were not. I really liked that you get a lot of sides with your meal.
