Perth Amboy has a rich history with both the Scottish and Irish. The city was settled and formed in 1683, and named after James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth, it's chief proprietor, who sponsored an expedition to the area.
After the Irish Diaspora, a good amount of the Irish immigrants who set off for New York City, were sent "downriver" to South Amboy, NJ, the city just south of the original Amboy. Many of them found their way to Perth Amboy, mostly because of it's booming harbor and factory jobs. In fact, enough ended up settling near the steel mill in the neighborhood near our clubhouse that it was nicknamed "Little Dublin" until mid 20th century.
To this day, there is still a statue in front of City Hall honoring the Earl of Perth's patronage.
