The Playwright Irish Pub, Restaurant & Banquet Facility has established itself as Hamden's authentic slice of the Emerald Isle. We opened our doors in 1999 and have been growing and providing excellent service ever since.

We serve fine Irish fare and American cuisine for lunch and dinner, daily.

Every Sunday from 11am - 1:30pm we also offer a traditional Irish breakfast and brunch menu. Located in the Whitneyville neighborhood of Hamden, it is where families, friends and neighbors gather to enjoy good food, the perfect pint of Guinness and listen to live music.

In addition to our restaurant, pub and outdoor decks, The Playwright boasts the perfect space for your next special occasion or event.
Our beautiful and spacious banquet facility can accommodate anywhere from 25-75 guests for a sit down party, and up to 150 guests for a cocktail buffet event!

As soon as you walk in, you dive into the world of our founder, Eamonn Ryan. The Playwright is decorated with authentic artwork, all of which comes directly from Ireland. We pride ourself on providing delicious food, excellent customer service, and lovely entertainment.

The Playwright in Hamden opened in 1999 and is one of Connecticut's most authentic Irish Pub, Restaurant and Banquet Facilities.

Twice a week, we house a Live Traditional Irish Music Session, which occurs every Tuesday and Sunday.

Other live music acts we house include the one and only Jeff Conlon (http://www.jeffconlon.net/), the wonderful multi-genre David & Chenot (https://www.stellaforbes.com/davidandchenot) and the Connecticut-based Irish and Celtic Music Band, The Coracles (http://www.thecoracles.com/), just to name a few.

Every Wednesday at 8:30 PM, Anthony Apuzzo of http://digitaltracksdj.com/ leads our trivia event, which includes cash prizes.

Best pub and authentic grub mix in Manhattan with amazing welcoming staff and the boss from Donegal! Visited here a few times during our stay and we always had great food, a super choice of cold beers and even better staff and met a few of the regulars who enjoy a good chat and definitely a good laugh! Every game or sport is on the multiple screens too but not blaring and was followed by some great music. Miss everyone already
The staff are so nice! I finished a prosthetic appointment early and walked down the street for a quick bite. They were affordable, fully accessible and the staff is very friendly. Definitely come for a beer, a burger and a chat w/ their nice Irish waiter John. There’s plenty of accessible outdoor seating, most of which is wheelchair accessible as well. I didn’t go deep into the place and didn’t use the restroom but I’ll definitely do that next time and let you know how it is.
When you enter there's a main floor and a downstairs. The whole place is pretty cozy with Christmas decorations and a warm din of chatter. They have several televisions throughout showing various games and channels so it's popular to catch whatever game you're interested in, I think. Some people come to have a nice meal with friends, some people come to get sh*t faced... pick your poison. Service is quick, but not really all that friendly. There isn't much in the way of bar bites, though the fries are nicely done. Fare is mostly what you'd find in a regular Irish Pub - bangers and mash, fish and chips, that kind of thing. Cocktails are not too bad - $14 on average.
Had a lovely dinner. Staff were really friendly. Food was delicious. Highly recommend. We had a burger and the nicest fries ever. We had bones bites and a cocktail too
It's an Irish bar.. in NYC.. runs by Indians. Nothing wrong with that, just gives it a more franchise and less authentic feel. As you would expect the best dish on the menu was the curry. It's also the home of the Real Madrid Supporters and as Liverpool fan, had I known this I would never have gone in. Guinness was cold and served quickly...that alone gets them 4 stars.
I popped in for a quick bite as I was staying in the area. My mushroom burger was tasty and the staff was friendly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming .
One of my favorite pubs in Manhattan. The Playright is a perfect spot to grab a pint of Guinness with your friends to catch up. It’s an amazing place to watch sports with all the TVs. There’s an upstairs too so plenty of space. It’s a Real Madrid bar so heads up to all the Barcelona fans out there. The food is great too. I love the wings, the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls, and the sweet potato fries.
Visiting from Utah, snagged a few drinks before our reservation at keens, the lady serving our drinks was fantastic, this was the first bar we walked into since coming into town. Thanks for the experience
The only thing I will say about this place is that if you have on your website that you have cocktails as part of your happy hour and you list all the cocktails and then people going to your establishment and ask for the cocktail that's on the website I'm confused why none of the bartenders knew anything about it and why you don't even carry the items to make those cocktails. That was annoying. The drink I did get was good so I cannot complain.
Honestly a vibe. Good drinks, well priced and fabulous service. Conor was one of the best bar tenders I’ve experienced. Beers under 10$ and reasonable cocktails. If you’re from out of town and want to get social come here.
