For more than 35 years I have been making knives and short swords, in addition to teaching the art of pottery.
My name is James B. Covert (art name, "Thunder"). My father called my brother and I “Boanerges” (from the bible, the "Sons of Thunder", James and John). There are some things in life that consume a man, like a fire. Knives and swords are my obsession. I can not remember a time that I was not mesmerized by a sharp blade.
At the age of fifteen, I asked my father to buy a bowie knife that had snared my heart. He thought about it for a moment and then said no. Looking me in the eye, he said I will show you how to make one. Thinking back on that first knife reminds me of an old saying, “If you only feed a man he will again grow hungry, but if you also teach him to plant he can teach others and never hunger again.” My father fed me and taught me how to plant.
"The Potter's Apprentice" specializes in making short swords and knives from recycled material and makeshift anvils and forges. Not only does James take custom orders for makeing knives, He teaches the art of "Bladesmithing" as well. James Covert performs knife making demonstrations to the public to help with fundraisers. James is featured in the book by Master Smith, Wayne Goddard, "The Wonder of Knifemaking" ,2nd ed., 2011. Wayne Goddard, was field editor for Blade Magazine and full time maker, teacher, and author.
James Covert, is also very gifted in the area of pottery. James teaches several different types of clay crafts, i.e. clay sculpting. James offers classes to individual or group settings. Email for more information.
