The Queen Theatre

About

The Queen Theatre is a historic movie theater in the heart of Downtown Bryan, Texas.

Description

The Queen Theatre was originally built in the late 1800's as a hotel in the heart of Downtown Bryan. The hotel began showing silent films on the ground level in the early 1900's. The name "Queen Theatre" was officially given to the building in 1914 and then in 1939 the hotel was converted into a fully operational movie theater. 5th Avenue Girl starring Ginger Rogers was the first movie shown in the Queen in 1939. The Queen operated as a movie theater from 1939 to the mid 1970's. The Downtown Bryan Association purchased the Queen in 2010 and began to revive the iconic building. The Queen Theatre is scheduled to reopen May 4, 2018 as a single screen movie theater and performance venue. The Queen will also house the Downtown Bryan Association offices, a Downtown Bryan visitor's center in the lobby and will be available to rent for private events.

Great movie experience. Reclining chairs and they bring awesome food right to you!
Opening night! We caught the last show of the evening. We were greeted by friendly staff who were quick to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. It was neat to see how they worked to make the space usable, with three floors of accessibility. The decorations were kept simple, but bring in elements from the original theater, including protected exposed brick, and rafter beams upcycled into a throne and massive mirror frame. We went before the movie, so we passed the time in The Crown Bar on the third floor and enjoyed some really good Nachos, Chocolate Cream Pie, and Bait Shop Shake. Billy's Grille and Bar menu can be viewed on the website. You can order in the bar, or from your theater seat. Once again, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We got to chat with the GM, and then Mr. Schulman himself came and talked with us! It was a delightful conversation about the fascinating history of the theater and other key points in downtown Bryan. The theater itself has balcony seating that can be accessed from the second and third floors, and the main level on the first floor. The restroom is on the second floor. All of these can be accessed by a narrow staircase or elevator. It really feels like a private theater that we are thrilled to see restored. To be part of opening night at such an historic venue in Bryan was a memory well made.
Super great experience! I love the awesome service they have. At the door you are greeted and they will take you straight to your seats. At the seat you can scan a barcode yo order food and have it delivered right to your seat! So convenient, and the food and drinks are so delicious. Will definitely go again.
Here’s a little hidden gem. Hidden on the 3rd floor of The Queen Theatre is a great little bar. The Crown Bar has room for around a dozen folks but it doesn’t feel crowded. It’s a great place to have a drink and watch a game. You can also order food from Billy’s Bar and Grill next door prepared perfect and served to you hot like they cooked it there. While you’re there enjoy a movie at the historic Queen Theater.
What can I say about the queen theater? Well, you say the least I was a little disappointed. I've been to theaters before but the same concept so it was nothing new there. I had never been to the Queen theater before so I really didn't know what to expect, we went for a dinner and a show. I was expecting to see a dining room with round tables and white tablecloths, perhaps a piano bar and a small stage with microphone. What I found was a movie theater, an old movie theater, with very very poor lighting for a live show on stage. I cannot attest to the ticket prices cuz I did not buy the tickets so therefore I don't know how much they were but I do know they were overpriced. We went to see a comedy show. Amateur comedian night apparently. Dinner menu consist of three items... A salad, plate of pasta, or a cheeseburger. I did not eat the food but I did have a strawberry milkshake or at least that's what I was told it was. It was more like melted ice cream and I'm talking completely melted, that someone had watered down. The talent was awful and I do mean awful. The host was horrible. I have seen funnier stuff at high school plays. The lighting was so bad you could not see anyone's face that was on stage You could not tell what they look like. There was a light just inches above by head on the wall that had an amber glow which prevented me from seeing basically anything. So you pay the price of the ticket, if you want anything besides the three items on the menu you must pay full price extra for them, they asked you to tip your servers who bring the food to you after they charge you a 18% service fee if you purchase anything, and then they ask you to tip the comedians on your way out... Isn't that what the price of the ticket was for? All in all, it was not a totally bad experience, and I do give it three stars. It was clean and there were electric reclining chairs so it was fairly comfortable except for the fact that it was extremely hot and I was sweating by the time I left. A little AC goes a long ways. I will go back one day, perhaps when the talent is better, and if my experience is better at that time I will definitely update this review. But as of today I cannot give it more than three stars. There is another theater downtown that is much older, or at least it seems much older inside, that offers a different atmosphere. I am not trying to bash the queen at all. I just like to leave honest reviews.
Atmosphere It is great to see that it has be remodeled and in service. If many wonder why seats feel similar to another theatre, it's because they utilized Premiere's old movie chairs. Did not know you could go upstairs until the second time I went but it's a nice touch. One issue with the seating on the bottom floor, is that there is no incline like the traditional theatres, but more of a stacked seatings, so if you don't want to be seeing the back of someone's head I would recommend seating in the first row to the pertaining step. Screen setup takes getting used to but don't notice it soon after need to look slightly up to see screen. Service The manager really knew about the movie that was being presented. I remember when I saw Batman Returns, he had some interesting trivia that I didn't know about the film and was a great touch to the overall theatre experience. Recommendation: The quality of the movie seems okay for the screen but would be great to utilize higher resolution film to maximize viewing experience. Having a fan vote/request feature would make experience that much more unique. Would highly recommend this theatre if in the mood for a classic movie in theater setting.
My favorite place downtown! The Queen has been my favorite spot since moving here a couple years ago. The new renovation is awesome! I love being able to order food directly to my seat straight from the website. I very HIGHLY appreciate a vegan option on the menu! It really means SO much to me and keeps me coming back. I love coming just to the Crown Bar as well, it's such a cool hangout spot. The best hidden gem in Bryan. I'm glad to see classic movies still playing now and then and hope it will continue!
This would be a great place to watch a movie with family and friends. Very comfortable. We plan to go as often as possible.
This place has been beautifully renovated and it seems very family friendly. The movie changes every showing, so make sure you check in advance. All the tickets are $5 but if you have a child then they get a free popcorn with that price. Also, you should know this movie theater will only be playing unconventional movies not major films.
My husband and I saw our first movie in the newly renovated theater last night. It was a really wonderful experience. The theater sound is awesome! Service was top notch. The menu prices were expensive, but seems everything is expensive these days. Check it out if you get a chance!
