Welcome to The Sargent House Museum. For over 100 years, the Sargent House Museum was the home of sea merchants, patriots and community leaders. A fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, the house was built in 1782 for Judith Sargent (Stevens) Murray, (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer and an early advocate of women's equality.

Visitors to the Sargent House Museum learn about the early history of Gloucester from its beginnings as a farming and lumbering outpost to its evolution into the country's premier seaport. Visitors will also see a collection of original works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), descendant of the Sargent family, who loved the house and its ties to Post-Revolutionary Gloucester.

"Built during the Revolutionary War, this elegant Georgian residence was home to early feminist Judith Sargent Murray, who penned “On the Equality of the Sexes” in 1791. View period furnishings and works by Fitz Henry Lane and John Singer Sargent in this splendid house overlooking Gloucester’s Main Street. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Memorial Day through Columbus Day, noon to 4 p.m with tours on the hour with admission fee. Special events this year mark the centennial of the house as a museum."

Wonderful exhibit by Vanessa Michalak MFA, BSN, RN- honoring the nurses of COVID! Be mindful, the gallery entrance is up the hill, not Main Street!!!
1782 Federalist Era home, Judith Sargent Murray an early American writer and her husband John Murray founder of the first Universalist Church in the USA lived here. They were acquainted with the Washington's and the Adams, and the home is filled with beautiful historic artifacts. Includes a collection of original John Singer Sargent pieces. Worth visiting!
