Artist Statement, Bio, and Resume'
Artist Statement:
My work is in stone, wood and some steel with most of it contemplative, organic, abstract forms. I strongly suggest that my pieces are periodically rotated in order to fully appreciate the nuanced shadows and textures of the work.
I have recently come across a brief synopsis of ABSTRACTION AND EMPATHY by Wilhelm Worringer that resinates with me, however I'm substituting the word sculpture for painting. There are two sensitivities required of a viewer of a work of art: EMPATHY, which allows the viewer to lose him/herself in a sculpture and to be at one with the subject, and ABSTRACTION, which allows the viewer to retreat from the complexities of the everyday world and follow the symbolic language of the form and texture of one of my sculptures.
If I can achieve that I am successful. Along those same lines I am reminded of what Nietzsche says, " we have art so that we shall not be destroyed by the truth".
Artist Bio:
I am a first born male child of the 40's from Jersey City, NJ. All through my Catholic college preparatory education I was told that, although I had some talent, people really didn’t make a living doing art. Thus, I got an education: Biology B.A. from WNMU, Zoology M.S. from LSU, and taught Biology for thirty years. Now, after getting art degrees: an A.A. Tulsa Community College, a B.F.A. University of Oklahoma, plus workshops (Jonathan Hils at OU; Jesus Moroles through the Oklahoma Arts Institute), I am now fulfilling my life long dream of making art.
