The Languages Department currently offers instruction in nine languages, comparative literature, linguistics, film studies and language pedagogy. Majors are available in French, German, and Spanish, along with Chinese Studies and Russian Studies.
The Languages Department currently offers instruction in nine languages. These include Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek (Ancient), Hebrew, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. In any language we offer, students may take courses toward the language requirement, or toward a minor or certificate program. Majors are available in French, German, and Spanish, along with Chinese Studies and Russian Studies. Languages faculty also offer courses in comparative literature, linguistics, film studies, and language pedagogy, producing a total range of innovative course topics such as Francophone African Cinema, the Faust Myth in German Literature and Film, Heroes of Spain from the 12th to the 21st Centuries, and Mexican Theater, Ritual, and Performance.
In the TU Classroom:
* Emphasis on communication
* Beginning and intermediate language classes limited to 22 students
* Advanced classes limited to 15 students
* A state-of-the-art multimedia language lab that provides interactive learning environments
* Designated language classrooms furnished with comfortable armchairs and small tables to create a welcoming atmosphere conducive to language acquisition.
Students who complete the undergraduate program will:
*Demonstrate language skills (i.e., reading and listening comprehension, speaking, and writing) that aid in the communication and understanding among persons and groups of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
*Demonstrate critical thinking and creative insights in the disciplined study of cultural media (such as literature and film) and linguistics.
*Demonstrate fluency and coherence when presenting ideas in writing and in speech.
