About

A very old style feeling meat market and cafe' All homemade

Description

Following the flood of 2008, the area known as CZECH VILLAGE, was virtually destroyed. Many businesses there and along the New Bohemia area on 3rd St. simply were not able to return. One of the most beloved storefronts was Pohlenas Meat Market. It will never be duplicated but we will give it our all! We are a meat market (kinda) southern hot dishes, retail jellies, spices and a place to come get coffee , kick your feet up, read the paper and sit a spell. 6:30 a.m. you can get breakfast burritos and the like, TO-GO! Saturday Mornings come get hot baked french bread and honey butter, because at 10:00a.m. We have live music until noon. Sundays we won't be open on account of Sundays are mine!! Please come ya'll. Lou

I visited the Village Meat Market for the first time, breakfast Saturday, December 29, 2018 and enjoyed the: Cowboy Quiche A hash brown crust filled with eggs, cheese, veggies and butcher loaf meat topped with cheese and breadcrumbs. $3.95 The Cowboy was not assembled as described on the menu, instead of all things in the quiche it was served as a separate mini quiche baked in a muffin pan, most likely earlier in the week with some spinach in it and cheese melted on top when reheated; the butcher loaf was cut into slices and fried with the hash browns and served on top of them, with a side of "cooling sauce" see attached picture. Although differing from the description in the menu the meal was enjoyed. I particularly liked the fried butcher loaf meat loaf. The "cooling sauce" is a whole lot of dill in ranch dressing; never would have thought of putting those together but very tasty. And let me remind you of the price, $4.00?!? Supper high value. My friend and I enjoyed the eclectic decor and I really got a kick out of the men's bathroom see attached images. Coffee was good and I walked away with a couple of candied bacons on a stick.
Literally went in to use the ATM, so glad I did, glanced at the menu... A wonderfully richly flavored secret family recipe Czech goulash and perfectly prepared beignets were my surprise delight. Family style seating, live rhythm and blues, a treat. Update: went back for the schnitzel... Red cabbage, warm potato salad, dark bread... Perfect... And of course, another order of beignets... Will be back next time I'm in Cedar Rapids.
Great place, helpful staff, tasty food, and friendly atmosphere. The owner is wonderful and sat down for a few chats to tell me about the food, local entertainment, and the history of the menu. I had the butcher loaf sandwich, goulash, and beignets. The goulash isn’t your traditional midwestern style with macaroni, but rather an old world hearty recipe that is apparently over 100 years old. I thought it was excellent. The butcher loaf sandwich had the perfect blend of meat, onions, and other ingredients. Not too much catsup, the bread was fresh and tasty, and just enough cheese. Finally the beignets are not to be missed. Well worth a visit if you’re in Cedar Rapids. I’ll most certainly stop again next time I’m in town.
This is an outstanding casual lunch spot in Cedar Rapids. When our families visit from NC and TN, we bring them here for good, flavorful comfort food! The menu is fairly small, which I always consider a good thing because it usually means a restaurant does a few dishes exceptionally well, and that is indeed the case with the Village Meat Market & Cafe. Because the people in my group all order different dishes, I have sampled almost everything on the menu and nothing has been disappointing. We all clean our plates! That said, the Village Schnitzel is my personal favorite. I recommend ordering 1/4 or 1/2 lb of the smoked salmon with dill sauce as an appetizer for the table before your meal arrives. My dad bought nearly 2 lbs of it to put on ice and take back to TN - it's that good, and reasonably priced. I never leave without taking home some of the sausages or smoked/deli meats from the meat case, and the dark bread loaves are to die for and great for toast the next day.
I love coming here with my parents for a great lunch. The atmosphere is relaxed and really enjoyable. You will love any choice you pick from the menu as all choices are delicious, authentic, and generous in portion. The staff and owners are wonderful and always make you feel right at home. Everything is home made. Make sure to try Grandma's German Potato Salad! She makes it herself and it's the best!
We really enjoyed our experience at Village Meat Market & Cafe. The food was great and reasonably priced. I loved the schnitzel which came with potatoes and candied red cabbage. We like the candied red cabbage so much, we bought more to take home. And their rye bread, which is home made and has a ton of stuff in it, was so good we bought 2 loaves to take home also. And the staff was just amazing. Service was friendly and fast. Would definitely recommend it as a must stop!
Amazing staff and some of the best smoked meats you will find in the Midwest! Their Prime Rib sandwich melts in your mouth, so good! The restaurant has a ton of personality and I always have a wonderful time when I stop in.
Special trip from west central Missouri to visit a friend, and staked this place out ahead of time. I knew what I'd want before I ever got there. A pleasant surprise was the live music that was being played when we arrived. They cleared a table to make room for two more customers. I ordered the pastrami & swiss. The baked beans were "highly" recommended for my side dish. I chose to go with fries and beans, and I asked for a sample of the smoked brisket. The sandwich was very good, and I'm happy that I got it. The beans were ok, but not a "highly recommended" item. The brisket barely had any smoke flavor, and no smoke ring visible. It had a dry rub on it, but really just tasted like a roast. There may be some good artisan items on the menu, but I would be careful in your choices. People don't appreciate when someone is trying to fool them. We had a decent lunch and a good time, but I would like to have had an experience closer to what I expected, as advertised. When in the area, I may go back, but I will ask for more detailed information about products, instead of the wishy washy answers that I got.
Fabulous place for lunch in Czech Village featuring old country recipes such as goulash with superb dumplings but also great smoked fish and meats by the pound and dark rye bread. Owner’s years in New Orleans very evident here as well. All in a low key and comfortable setting and very reasonable prices. Two visits and would return tomorrow!
This place is just amazing. Nostalgic and eclectic atmosphere. Our server was super kind and attentive; the food, omg the food- from the coffee to the bread and from the fries to the quiche, it was all excellent and absolutely on point. Definitely added this place to my favorites and will probably become a regular to be honest. Oh, and to top all off, hella affordable which is always nice.
