Description

Thomas Gallery

Tom Thomas Gargiulo came from a dual background as a Ph.D. in Psychology with extensive training in Art History and Anthropology to form Thomas Gallery in downtown Manhattan in 1997 to balance intellectual with design pursuits.

Since its inception the gallery has seen decorative arts more than a set of objects to decorate a room rather as a vibrant representation of human culture of each age and as a portal to understanding it. All of us seek to have connection to our past, our beliefs, traditions and culture. Part of the way we do that is through objects around us. Objects are a physical embodiment of our thoughts and ideas.

Dealers are in a unique position. They may choose from the whole palette of art history to create their vision of culture and society through fine and decorative arts. In the gallery’s early days it presented several exhibitions on topics considered too small for museums and too non-commercial for galleries. We explored the evolution of Italian lighting from 1945 to 1980, the work of Early German Modernism leading up to the Bauhaus Movement, the glory of French Ironwork of the 1940’s and the stunning leather covered furniture of Jacques Adnet.

Since then we have attracted a stunning client list that has included Architectural Digest, Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Nate Berkus, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, Channel, Ann Coultner, Thierry Despont, Tom Ford, Robert Gober, Gramercy Hotel, Jacques Grange, Victoria Hagan, Tom Hanks, Marc Jacobs, Amabel and Tony James (Blackstone), Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Lurie (Philadelphia Eagles), Madonna, Eli Manning, Peter Marino Architect, Steve Martin, Mathew Marks Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art (curators), Paul McCartney, Lachlan Murdoch, Museum of Modern Art (curators), Pradha, Keanu Reeves, Ian Schrager, Sex in the City, Michael Smith, Tiffany’s, Steve Tisch (NY Giants), The Vitra Design Museum, Germany, Lilly Zanuck.

The gallery now occupies a loft space at 315 East 91st Street. Although the gallery is primarily interested in the 20th Century we realize the roots of Modernism are ancient; we continue to be interested in the past, present and future of decorative arts not just as objects but also as vessels of meaning. We are willing to explore the work of important creators and those considered unknown, to present important historical pieces and high quality pieces of style.

This is a lovely place. The selection is exceptional. The pieces are beautiful. If you have any need to purchase French or Italian mid -century modern I would recommend a visit to his warehouse or his website. Tom has an affable manner . He is glad to spend time pointing out the details which make each piece unique. It is a pleasure to do business with such a professional individual.
Share review Embed review Write an update Edit review 11/16/2020 I learned about Thomas Gallery through an artist familiar with the gallery. By introduction, I got to meet the owner of the gallery to inquire about decorative arts and the pieces he had available at the gallery. The gallerist took the time to show me his gallery and warehouse full of items with rich history. He took the time to teach me about many of the pieces and gave me context to decorative arts movements and the craftsmanship of the unique pieces they owned. He advised me on museum collections to visit, auctions to attend, and private collections to go see. This interaction has helped direct my eye to understand the history and craftsmanship of a number of decorative arts movements which has been invaluable to me as a collector. I have a lot of gratitude for his generosity of time and his wealth of knowledge. I hope to do business with him on a piece from their collection soon.
I purchased a pair of beautiful Murano chandeliers for my home from Thomas Gallery Ltd. The light coming from them is magical and they’ve totally changed the feeling of my home. I love my home even more! Since I purchased a pair, I also got a nice discount on the 2nd piece. In addition, the owner assisted me to have them delivered and professionally installed. It was pleasure working with them as all the details were handled professionally and efficiently.
I’m writing today to tell you how grateful I am to Thomas Gargiulo. He helped clarify what my girlfriend and I have been struggling with for several months. I contacted T. Thomas Gargiulo from Thomas Gallery Ltd to evaluate the furniture I inherited from my family’s estate. Mr. Gargiulo visited us at our apartment in Manhattan and conducted a thorough review. He explained the history of our furniture, its origin, materials, and means of construction, design and value. Upon completion we asked if he would be interested to purchase it. He declined but mentioned other venues that could handle the sale for us. Tom, graciously, charged us nothing for the time he spent with us. He complimented our family on its taste and departed. We are very grateful to Tom. We learned about our furniture, and ultimately, we decided to keep honoring the legacy of our family! Thanks again Thomas.
Horrible experience! Went through 1stDibs, of no help, also Amex, owner made me pay despite explaining that I was merely inquiring! Don’t ever buy from him! Then he told me that I had to come in to NYC to pick up an item that I did not want in the first place, and he told me to bring my own wrapping material! Nice guy to deal with!! NOT!!
Absolutely professional. Great experience, great piece, very happy to have come across this seller and would buy from him again!
Looking forward to working with Tom and the gallery again!
Very great experience! I recommend
