Just incredible! Please take the time to drive here and take the tour. The guided tour was so informative with background on different events. Must see for our children to get a better understanding of our founding fathers and the life they lived. Loved seeing the replica Declaration of Independence, less than 50 still known to be in existence. Lots of walking paths and beautiful views.
Did the 45-min guided tour; very organized. Definitely worth it. Unfortunately, we had only 2.5 hrs to spare, so not enough time. Recommend at least 3 hrs if you want to soak in the history. Awesome place for history buff. A lot of great history, somber ones too. The guide provided great info about the mansion as well as Jefferson's history, good and bad. The guided tour about slavery at Monticello was a somber one, but a must do. We also attended the "Meet Thomas Jefferson." The gentleman who portrayed Jefferson did an excellent job. The grounds and gardens were immaculate. The trees are beautiful and saved us from the scorching 90° sun. The views were spectacular.
Such a marvelous piece of our history warts and all. By now everyone knows Jefferson owned slaves and fathered children with one of his house keepers/nannies. He was a very complex man and very intelligent. I could go on for several pages about him and his estate. The tour was excellent and the gentleman who is on the site who portrays Jefferson was excellent. I wish there was someone like that at Mt. Vernon to portray Washington. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about my experience here. Our tour guide was excellent. She was personable and very knowledgeable. You can tour all of the grounds, the mansion and basement which was very informative and interesting. There are slave quarters and shops so you get a real feel for what it was back then. The large Jefferson burial area was also interesting to view. A very peaceful serene setting not too far from the mansion. There is a great visitor’s center and museum and I highly recommend seeing both along with a short film before you take the shuttle up to the mansion. I learned how intelligent, inquisitive and inventive Jefferson was. I highly recommend reading a biography of Jefferson before you visit. It will bring the entire experience to life.
An amazing historical site! There is lots of history surrounding this estate to learn and explore. The tour was a great experience. The views of the surrounding area were beautiful and very calming. I highly recommend visiting!
I recently moved to Charlottesville and Monticello was number 1 on my list to do. I opted for the I depth house tour which was 2-3 hours and 90$. This tour allows you to go upstairs and tour all the rooms in the house and I would recommend this tour. I arrived at 9am, checked in and took the bus to the top of the house. You can hike up the path to the house also but it’s not wheelchair friendly and uphill. The tour ended around noon and by then the entire grounds were packed. I definitely recommend going first thing in the morning inside the house especially if the weather is hot and humid. I spent another 45 minutes walking around the gardens & the old structures around the area. I opted to walk down the trail to the visitor center which is a beautiful hike down and you can pass Thomas Jefferson’s gravesite with hundreds of family members. The visitor center is lovely and filled with wonderful trinkets. It’s a must to do in this area!
We had the most excellent guide, Ashley, for the Slavery to Freedom tour. She told the story and asked thoughtful questions that drew her audience into the period. She all of the questions that were thrown at her. She was not judgemental. The museum itself was great at giving us a visual of the man Thomas Jefferson and his plantation. This is an experience that we highly recommend for everyone. The main gift shop had a wealth of additional information. The price for the tour is reasonable given that we had the freedom to see other things. All of the staff were very nice. I loved the convenience of the air conditioned shuttle. We didn't take pictures of the house this time. The architecture is amazing. Thanks to the foundation for preserving this history. Good job.
Beautiful historical place with a lot of stuff to see. All day trip for $42 including the shuffle and the guides showing and telling the stories. Must see if you want to know more about the history of the United States of America. The only thing I didn’t like about the place was wasting all the vegetables and fruit like tomatoes and watermelons. They are there just for show and unfortunately you can see them hanging and rotting.
This was one of the best run historical sites I have visited. Everything was extremely well organized, and the staff were fantastic. We reserved tickets online and went in the middle of the day on a Friday. While pricy over $40 each for a 45 minute house tour, this is a nonprofit, and because of how well it was run, how knowledgeable the employees were, and how many things we were able to see, it was well worth the money. The only time we had to wait for anything was for our house tour to start, but you are able to walk around and look at other things during that time. The shuttle bus to the top was quick and prompt. We easily could have spent a full day touring the grounds and surrounding sites, but we spent about 3.5 hours touring the house, grounds, and taking an additional tour covering enslaved labor, which I highly recommend, as that is such a significant portion of the history here. It is no extra cost to attend additional tours once you have paid for entry. The tour guides for both tours were excellent and highly knowledgeable, even providing images and primary source documents to illustrate their tours. Bring a reusable water bottle, as there are fill stations at the visitor center near the restrooms when you enter and on the top of the mountain near the restrooms. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to do a good bit of walking! This is a must do if you visit the Charlottesville area.
Interesting place. The self guided house tour was a little cramped because they sell so many tickets for each time slot. I ended up skipping a couple rooms of the house because it was impossible to see anything with 15-20 other people in there. Definitely impossible to take photos too with so many people in the way. The outside exhibits and grounds were easier to see. $32 is a little steep for what you actually had access to. $20 would be more reasonable.
Overpriced, disorganized & crowded, because tickets are oversold. Guided tours and self guided tours collide at times, leaving crowded areas with yelling tour guides and self tour people playing the recording tour at high volumes on their phone speakers. Earlier this week we visited George Washington's Mt. Vernon home. Tickets to that we're only $26 and the Jefferson house was $32 to$42, even though the Washington tour was infinitely better. There is so much more there there, the tour guides were better, the buildings were in better shape, and the museum was 10x better. Jefferson's family sold EVERYTHING inside the house, so many of the items you see on this tour were ever in Jefferson's home. Arrive early! We arrived at the house 3-4 minutes late because we had to wait for the bus. They made us wait 40 minutes for the next tour.
