In 1636, Saint Jean De Brebeuf, a Jesuit Missionary also known as the Apostle to the Hurons, witnessed an athletic event played between Native American tribes. The Native Americans referred to it as The Creator's Game, which was often times played to cure disease, change the weather, or as an alternative to war. Saint Jean, noting the resemblance between the sticks they used and a Bishop's staff, or Crosse, gave The Creator's Game a new name: Lacrosse.
