The Town of Berkley was established April 18, 1735, and named for George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloynes, Ireland. Berkley is bordered north by Taunton, east by Lakeville, south by Freetown and west by the Taunton River and Dighton. The town is divided by the state highway route 24. The total area of the town is 16.4 square miles with additional square miles of water. Berkley is in Bristol County, about 40 miles south of Boston.
The mission of the Berkley Police Department is to provide a high level of safety, security and service for all members of the community. As a regulatory agency of local government, the police department has the direct responsibility for the preservation of public peace; for the reduction of the opportunity to commit crime; and for the effective delivery of a wide variety of police services. The police have a sworn duty to directly apply and execute the law fairly and objectively for the benefit of the entire community.
