Description

The Hyde Park Police Department provides full-time police coverage to the residents of the Town of Hyde Park. The police department currently consists of a chief of police, a lieutenant, three sergeants, a detective, and fifteen officers (8 full-time/7 part-time). There are three full-time police assistants (dispatchers) and six part-time police assistants. The department provides safety and security to over 21,000 town residents and their property. In addition, contained within the Town of Hyde Park are such notable areas as the Culinary Institute of America, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Estate and Library, the Vanderbilt Mansion, Norrie Point State Park, and the Ogden Mills Mansion. The department also shares responsibility for security of the county's E911 facility, the Hudson River Psychiatric Center, and the New York State Emergency Management Center. The department works closely with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police, and the National Park Service. The department patrols an area of approximately 37.6 square miles that includes approximately 167 miles of town roads. The department is responsible for patrolling large sections of State Routes 9 and 9G, and actively enforces vehicle and traffic laws. The department has a full-time school resource officer (SRO) at FDR High School that works closely with the town’s youth, as well as a part-time SRO that works at Haviland Middle School. A number of officers are trained in juvenile investigation, sex crimes investigation, accident investigation, and crime scene/evidence processing. The department has a state certified polygraph examiner that is occasionally called upon by other local police agencies. Several officers are certified child safety restraint technicians and provide assistance installing car seats upon request. A large number of the officers in the department are town residents, having been born and raised here and having attended Hyde Park schools. The members of the department look forward to working with the community and continuing to provide professional police services to those who live and work in the Town of Hyde Park.
