What should students expect?
To get the most out of a tutoring session, students should come prepared to engage in a conversation about their writing. It is extremely helpful for students to bring a copy of their assignment and any drafts/notes they may have. Tutoring sessions usually:
*Last 20-30 minutes.
*Focus on two or three writing skills.
*Improve writing skills through the
conversational model with a tutor.
*Involve conversing, thinking, reading
aloud, brainstorming, and more.
*May lead to follow-up sessions.
Students SHOULD NOT expect:
*To drop off assignments for proofreading.
*To have a tutor make the corrections.
*To get an "A" on an assignment simply
because he or she visited the Writing
Center.
*To visit the Writing Center at the last minute
for help with assignments.
*To cover an entire paper in one session.
***Students should come in two or three (or more) days before the assignment is due so that he or she can thoughtfully revise the assignment.
Our Mission:
The Writing Center provides trained peer tutors who work with students to improve criti-cal writing skills. The Writing Center assists writers at any point in the writing process with any project they might have, whether it is an English paper or a research paper for sociology. The tutors work one-on-one or in small group settings to help students with all types of writing at any stage of the writing process. Our aim is to help learners to be more effective and efficient thinkers; we attempt to help students become better writers and thinkers, not just to improve a specific assignment. Our goal is to encourage true education.
