For drivers to obtain or update their medical examiner's certificate, our staff will ask personal information and health history to properly fill in the sections of the medical form in our office. You will need to provide genuine information about illnesses suffered within the previous five years. The form captures data on head and spinal injuries, psychological disorders, physical impairment, and diseases of the abdominal organs. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration encourages medical examiners to discuss these details with the drivers.
Also included in the medical examination form from the Department of Transportation are comments by the medical examiners, as required by the FMCSA. The examiners provide feedback depending on the responses of the drivers and report any hazards that may result from a driver's medication.
Dr Humberto Pagan is a certified medical examiner through NRCME. The FMCSA requires driver tests and record of the driver's vision, hearing, blood pressure and urinary conditions. The examiner also records the height, weight and general appearance of a driver.
A driver with higher blood pressure who has either stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension may be certified for a shorter amount of time while undergoing drug therapy to lower his blood pressure. A driver with blood pressure at or greater than 180/110 has stage 3 hypertension and cannot be certified, even temporarily, until blood pressure is reduced to 140/90 or less.
