As soon as an Onibaba Instagram reel popped up on my phone, I knew I wanted to go there; so we went there for lunch the very next day. On our table: Tuna Mayo Onigiri Cheese Yaki Onigiri Oyako Onigiri - salty salmon and salmon roe Ajitama Onigiri - marinated egg and sesame seeds Unagi Yaki Chazuke - Grilled rice ball, grilled eel and egg We had ordered Tuna Mayo onigirl in another restaurant the night before we came to Onibaba. Our daughter had really enjoyed the Tuna Mayo onigiri the night before; she enjoyed the Tuna Mayo onigiri at Onibaba even more. My daughter and I are both cheese lovers so we each got a Cheese Yaki onigiri to ourselves. Crispy rice on the outside, gooey cheese on the inside. I loved this; however, with all the other food we had on the table, the Cheese Yaki onigiri was a bit heavy on the stomach. I might have fared better if I'd gone with a Kombu onigiri, which was my original plan. Oyako and Ajitama were both tasty. I did wish there had been a bit more egg in my Ajitama onigiri. I let my husband try it, and there was almost no egg left in it by the time he handed it back to me. Unagi Yaki Chazuke came in a bowl, accompanied by a teapot which contained broth for us to pour over the onigiri. I love how this restaurant has so many different types of onigiri offerings! Onibaba's selection and quality is outstanding and were quite possibly the best onigiri I've ever tried! The rice was delicious, the toppings were fresh, and the nori was the perfect consistency to still provide a nice crunch while also being just soft enough. I ordered the sake salmon and ume Japanese plum, and my wife ordered the Ebi Mayo tempura shrimp and mayo and the yaki onigiri with sweet miso paste all pictured -- and everything was just absolutely delicious! This place is undoubtedly worth your time, especially if you like or have always wanted to try onigiri!
Maybe good at other foods they serve, but not the curry dishes. Curry taste and thickness and rice / udon are fine, but the way they cooked and the quality of poultry, have room to improve. Udon definitely not worth.Food: 2/5
Nice spot to grab small Japanese bites. Went on a Friday afternoon and took about 40 minutes to be seated. Small place, feel bad because you can tell they are understaffed. The udon came out fast, like 10 minutes but the oninigri took 30+ minutes. It was okay, I’d come back to try something else.Food: 4/5
Overhyped and not worth the wait. I'd heard great things about this place on social media and visited on a Thursday evening. We waited for over 1 hr to be seated which is fine, but the food itself was overcooked. The Katsu Don chicken was so chewy and rubbery. I couldn't keep eating it. I was super excited about the Cheese Onigiri and it was burnt and inedible. It was honestly gross. That night and day following, my partner and I had serious stomach issues after eating here. I'm giving this place 2 stars since it seems my experience might have been irregular considering all the positive reviews. The staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere is great. It's a very small space so try to get there right at open.
One of the few places in Seattle worth going to, both from a price and quality standpoint. Small, classic Japanese bites in a cozy unassuming location. First come first serve, no reservations. Everything pretty spot on. Only complaints would be the onigiris have too much white rice, and the cheese cod one was too cheesy, a little overwhelming. Get the musubi - great balance of ingredients and flavor. Avoid the honeydew sake.
What a hidden treasure in the international district! I got the luxury to dine in and sit at the front right next to the chef. Head Chef & owner Sho served us katsu & fried rice, onigiri and several rolls. This truly was an amazing experience, after dining I got the chance to speak to Sho and learn more about his practice & history of the restaurant. It’s been family owned since inception and had many hometown legends such as Ichiro frequent. Apart from dining the seating is quite cozy but do not let that deter you from what awaits inside! Best to call weeks in advance to book your reservation as they are always in high demand. 10/10 would visit again next time I find myself in Seattle! Perfect walking distance from Kinokuya book store if you’re looking for something to do before & after your meal.
As soon as I heard about Onibaba I had to check this place out, there is not a lot of places in Seattle to get Onigiri so I was excited to learn that is place existed, I have to recommend all of the Yakionigiri it is such an unique way to enjoy the dish, if you have a free moment to drop in, or need a nice sit down please you have to check out Onibaba
*Important Note* They just opened at the beginning on May, 2023 so ignore all reviews and pictures before this point! Past reviews were for when this space was just Tsukishinbo but this is a whole different restaurant and menu. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. I had the katsu curry pork which was delicious. The curry didn't taste much different from S&B out of a box but that's still doing it right in my book. Miso soup was solid. I asked for a half-sweet Lemon-Hi and it was perfect, I could've easily kept having those all night. I got 3 onigiri to-go: tuna mayo, mentaiko, and unagi. I had them an hour later so the nori got hydrated but I can attest from seeing neighboring tables get fresh ones, it comes out crisp and smelling amazing. I particularly the mentaiko and unagi, as you'd expect, but I'd get all 3 again. Prices were right on. Katsu curry, $22 Lemon-Hi, $12 Onigiri: Tuna Mayo, $6 Mentaiko, $6.5 Unagi, $7 The guy running front of house was a beast and a friendly one at that. He was on top of seating people, serving dishes, tracking people waiting outside for a table, taking orders, serving to-go orders to others waiting outside, and rembering everyone and everything thrown at him. At the while, being informative, kind, and apologetic for any amount of waiting, even though it was totally understandable given the absolute onslaught of people that came as soon as they opened back up for dinner. Mad respect, they got the right guy for the job, although it's frankly a 3 person job and they could certainly use more staff so my man doesn't collapse Very highly recommend this place, as long as you're willing to wait 20-45min for a table and 10-20 for takeout if ordering more than what they have in the prepped onigiri case. Vegetarian options: Plenty of meatless onigiri and small plates. Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs but it's on a hill.
I thought the sushi were ok, but the hot food kinoko tofu and soft shell karaage were good. However, this was all before the server spilled the tofu dish on us, and all we got was a verbal apology and a clumsy clean-up. I left dinner feeling annoyed and still had to clean my clothes and shoes after getting home Not a good experience…
