Study of Language and Math is a research study established by Dr. Marie Coppola under her Language Creation Lab at University of Connecticut.
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students perform poorly in mathematical tasks relative to normally hearing (NH) peers. Prior research does not explain this “math gap.” We are studying how Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing children process and understand math through language and our goal is to understand the effects of language modality (sign vs. spoken) and the difference in the timing of language exposure in deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children ages 3-6.
