Student Government is the group responsible for representing the interests of the student body at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. We are comprised of nine non-voting Executive Board members, 26 voting Senators, one Staff Advisor, and any number of non-voting fellows.
The President and Vice President are elected each spring by the student body. The remaining six executive board members are appointed by the President and confirmed by a majority vote of the Senate.
Senators are elected in the spring at the same time as the President and Vice President. There are two seats for representatives from each of the four academic units, plus one additional at-large seat for every 500 students enrolled at the campus. Four of these seats are left open until the Fall semester, when they are to be filled by incoming freshmen and/or transfer students.
During the academic year, we meet on a weekly basis to discuss the issues that students face on our campus. Meeting dates, times, and locations can be found on our calendar. All meetings are open to the student body and the general public!
We work with faculty and staff to achieve an outcome that benefits everyone in our campus community. We maintain communication with the Faculty Senate and Staff Senate by regularly attending their meetings; often times the issues that concern students are issues that concern everyone in the campus community (i.e., food options).
The mission of Student Government at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is to construct and promote a common voice; to encourage the continuous exchange of ideas between students, faculty and administration; to recommend policies and procedures concerning the University to the governing bodies on campus; to enhance the students' academic and social environment; and to promote the welfare of the student body through advocating on their behalf.
