The mission of the Department of Music is to offer all students who have demonstrated interest and ability in music the opportunity to continue further study either for a profession or an avocation. We strive to educate students in such a way that they understand and appreciate music not only as an art form with a rich historical and cultural heritage, but as an ongoing, contemporary endeavor that incorporates tradition and technological advancements through individual and group participation.
The Department of Music is located in the Moore Hall. The performing spaces in the building include the instrumental rehearsal hall (band room), the choral rehearsal hall, and the recital hall (Moore Hall Auditorium). Moore Hall Auditorium seats approximately 200 people and is used for most of the department's events. Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC), which seats over 1,600, is used for large ensemble performances, and other large music events (UNCP Honor Band, UNCP Honor Choir, hosting events like District Band, All-County Band, etc.). The University Center annex is also used for some performances and events (some jazz ensemble concerts, choral concerts, etc.).
