The Universal Kidney Foundation was founded in 2008 in response to the need for providing assistance to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney related illnesses in Flint, Michigan and greater Genesee County. The economic impact due to the loss of jobs in the area, resulting in loss of insurance coverage and benefits, and high costs of medical expense made it difficult for many patients to adequately access treatment and various related healthcare services. There was simply a lack of resources in the area to help bridge the gap in services. Many patients found themselves unable to get to/from dialysis, unable to afford necessary medication and equipment for health maintenance, and some even without the basic essentials such as food, shelter and utilities. UKF became a resource to many patients in these types of situations and through these services.
The Universal Kidney Foundation has made it our mission to assist individuals in receiving needed services and resources, as well as educating patients and families about the effects of kidney disease, and bringing awareness to the public about kidney disease. Our efforts to equip individuals with the knowledge of kidney disease, will nurture a healthier, more vibrant community. We see the value in education and believe when people have the knowledge to make wise, healthy choices, and resources needed, they are more prone to do so.
The Universal Kidney Foundation is committed to working collaboratively with area businesses and nonprofit organizations to raise awareness regarding kidney-related health care in Genesee County and its surrounding communities. We are working with a diverse group of community partners, programs, and networks to educate the public and impact the health of those lives impacted by kidney disease. Through these partnerships, research, and innovative programs, UKF will expand its reach outside of Michigan and ultimately touch the lives of individuals across this globe.
